Ubisoft FarCry 5 'are you ready' thread just shown up....

Played Far Cry since the very first back in '04/05, loved it to bits, one of my all time favourite games along with Deus Ex and have done loads of replays on it.

Fast forward to the latest...the latest one just isn't hitting any of the right notes for me to the point after 4 hours in I got bored and got a refund through steam :(

It's not bad, don't get me wrong, it's just very 'meh' and samey to 3 and 4.

Ah, you've fallen into the trap of thinking that large budget games might still be made with some semblance of passion or desire to create an amazing experience for the player... it's all just about making bank these days and that means the product needs to be just good enough to avoid a major PR disaster or backlash, whilst spending as little as possible by re-using and recycling as much as they can and cutting corners at every opportunity

I think we are being a bit harsh to FC5 it’s a hell of a game, back then it was all about who can fit the most details in and yes they’ve lost the way a little bit but let’s not forget FC5 is the better ALL round game than any of the others. That’s what counts imo

I too hugely enjoy the game and I'm just swanning around now finishing the last of the remaining outposts. I am tempted to restart but in order to do so and progress properly you have to focus on ONLY the story missions as doing anything else fills the resistance bar too fast, and then post-endgame finish off sidequests etc. You can't really play the game how you want it to, which really hurts when you think about it. In FarCry 4 I could gain experience by doing random things, and I didn't have to do daft challenges to get upgrade points. I could essentially play how I wanted to without messing with other weapons.

Having said all that, Ubisoft have a truckload of work on their hands to fix this though, there is no denying the game is busted as hell in a great deal of places. These issues make themselves apparent so early into any gaming session that it is a wonder if they actually did any playtesting whatsoever. Does anyone know how AC:Origin fared after release in comparison?

That sounds bad, I was going to wait 'til the bugs were patched anyway but that resistance meter sounds like a deal-breaker for me - what do you mean you can't do side quests or resistance bar fills up too fast? What is the resistance bar? I hate the sound of it. I love being able to just wander around a beautiful gameworld and do side quiests - in great games (e.g. Witcher 3) I often don't do any main story missions for days on end. If I can't play the game how I want to, then that does not sound good at all.

AC: Origins was surprisingly brilliant since they took two years on it instead of just churning out a reskin of the same AC game every year, as previously. It's really good this time, sad that FC5 does not sound similar, yet.

The map is split into regions, each run by a boss. Within each region there are sidequests, random encounters and story missions - the usual affair. Each region has its own resistance bar, which gradually fills up by doing the said activities. Everything, even saving a woman at the roadside who is being kidnapped results in points added to the meter. Once the meter is filled, it leads to a forced encounter with the boss. Once a boss is killed, all random enemy spawn - be it in the air or road is drastically or completely reduced.

Now, should this meter be filled up BEFORE you finish any story missions then you automatically face the boss and any story missions are skipped. Any outposts and sidequests still remain thankfully. I filled the meter for Jacob's region in just 7hrs by just having fun and then I realised my mistake, I hadn't done that many story missions and now had to face the big cheese. As an example in FarCry 4 you trigger the boss encounters yourself by going to their relative fortresses.

For those who have finished the game, we now are armed to the teeth but with nothing to do except for explore and hunt animals. Sure we can reset the outposts as we could in previous games but that doesn't bring back the madcap road/air/random spawns. The meter still remains my biggest complaint - either greatly increase the points required to fill it or get rid.

what do you mean you can't do side quests or resistance bar fills up too fast? What is the resistance bar?
Definitely not a fan of that mechanic.

Essentially, each of the three regions of the map is controlled lieutenant (one of the family members of the cult) and whenever you do something in one of those regions (take an outpost, free some prisoners, blow up an oil tanker, complete any side mission and so on) a meter relating to the resistance group's strength against that lieutenant fills up.
On the meter there are a couple of milestones where you'll be forced to interact with that lieutenant and progress the story... do enough things and you'll fill the entire bar and the game will force you into a boss fight against that individual to claim control of the region.

Once you've done that in all three regions, you'll end up having a mission to fight the final boss and end the story.

If you want to screw around and not progress the story, you'll either have to go up to one of the arcade machines in the game world. Or you can liberate one region of the map and stay in that area.
Unsure if doing the 'secret' ending at the start of the game allows you to play freely...

So let me get this straight then folks, because I didn't realise what Kainz and suenstar are saying was the case. So to get the most out of the game you need to stick to just the story missions and avoid side missions or liberating captives etc? If I stick to the story missions then in theory at least, I'll get to see all the story missions in the game and once I complete the story/campaign I can then return to each region and work through the side missions?

Yes, this is what I did for the remaining 2 regions but....I couldn't play it the way I wanted to. After finishing the story missions I still had some points remaining on one of the boss's bars so I had to go and accumulate them through the odd outpost/encounter, you get what I mean though. It is the same for 'perk' points used for skill upgrades, which you get through 'challenges'. To get those you have to fulfill certain criteria (kill xx of xx via this method or fly 2k in a wingsuit etc). Wtf can't I just play the game MY way and accumulate XP like I did in FC4?

Despite all this, I still hugely enjoy just messing around but only Ubisoft, with their updates dictate how fast boredom sets in.

I fell for the hype, a few youtubers I follow were playing it prior to release and it looked loads of fun. A few hours in and I just felt like i've been here before.

Ouch! Resistance bar sounds like a right killjoy. Might just get an expansion to the Witcher instead, I like being able to explore and do my own thing. I would find that resistance bar and missing out on story missions and not being allowed to do sidequests extremely annoying. Thanks for the heads-up.

The two expansions to Witcher 3 are incredible. I'd definitely get them instead and support a dev that actually cares about their games and customers.

You hav'nt played Ass Creed Origins, Horizon Zero Dawn or Monster Hunter then? Theres plenty of games out side of the likes of COD that are more than just cash grabs.

Cheers, I'll stick to the story missions for now then as I'm only about 2 hours total into the game so far.
