Large AAA companies have only their profits to consider, and these will be maximized to the breaking point of their customers. That's only natural; it's the economic society we live in. Large companies are ONLY in it for the money.
If you’re looking for games enthusiasm, idealism, and customer support look at the indie scene. Indie games are mostly graphically inferior but infinitely more imaginative and playable. This is a generalization with which I’m quite happy.
At the same time, this means that the larger any development costs are, the sooner products must be pushed out of the door to still make a profit, and this inevitably means buggy products. Inevitably!
This means that as long as we don’t change our purchasing practices 1) we must learn to accept extremely buggy first-day releases and 2) mainly costly franchises (sequels to previously successful series) will be borked. Inevitably!
As long as companies can get away with it, this will continue, so we'll all have to live with it.
But my main point is the astounding stupidity of customers, whose actions allow this to continue. They will still keep on buying and buying, regardless, and the companies not only know this, they rely on it.
This customer behavior is absolutely beyond my understanding.
Customers are abused, lied to, insulted and left stranded with inadequate support. Reboot your machine and make sure all current drivers are installed. Yes, thank you very much.
And still they buy.
Just a few hours after release, and mostly even before that, reviews and opinions of those, who are stupid enough to have been the first to fall over their own two feet in the first day, first hour, first minute purchase frenzy, surface all over the place. Amazon reviews, small game review sites, and in a myriad other places. Within the first two hours there is no excuse for anybody not to know that a game release is sub-par.
I’m not talking about the commercial review franchises who rely on advertising revenue and other perks of the job to produce … um… slightly skewed opinions, let’s say, I’m talking about the actual customers who have unsurprisingly enough discovered that they’ve been burnt.
And still they buy.
Help me here. Is it the rush of the instant purchase, do be one of the very first to have the product within their grasp? Is it the hope that future patches will make a game playable and, hopefully, enjoyable?
Could be, could be, I don't know.
But, what gets me most of all is that despite all these information tools at their disposal, people still fall into the trap and then WHINE AND COMPLAIN ENDLESSLY. You have no idea how much you people get on my nerves.
Do you realize that if you’d have just waited 120 minutes, you’d have been alright?
If you're that stupid, then live with it! These people should keep very quiet, be very embarrassed, and hope that nobody finds out how stupid they actually are.
And customers who shell out good money on pre-purchase must be completely insane, above and beyond just plain stupid.
Of course, now and again a franchise will not be a disappointment. It’s a psychological necessity so that the next buggy release will find its customers who rush in, and we all know who rushes in, don’t we? Bit of a costly lottery though, isn't it?
Just my opinion.
