Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal

I quite like Unity actually, although with the workspace switcher you can't have Firefox open in two seperate workspaces.

If you have it open on the one workspace, switch over to another workspace and try and open Firefox it will take you back to the original workspace.

I have been impressed with stability of 11.04 Ubuntu ,no crashes apart from when I tried to install Gnome 3(was curious) and it broke my Ubuntu, however did not take me long to reinstall Ubuntu 11.04,was impressed it had drivers for my Leadtek usb freeview stick, even ATi drivers have been fine.

I did have one minor issue with Audigy 4 soundcard (sound was very low and distorted),I had to install Gnome Alsa mixer and tick the Audigy analogue/dgital output jack box, only took a minute once I knew the fix.

I wish Win7 would install this fast and with all drivers but you can't have everything ;).

Damn Love gnome-shell !

Even the super key (windoze key) works like Joli OS ie minimize / show desktops ...

I also installed the Joli OS theme snagged from /usr/share/icons + themes

Made these notes if anyone wants to follow this route ...

gnome-shell --replace & if you want to see it in action

to make it perm do this

gconf-editor

Desktop/Gnome/Session/Requited..../windowmanager changed from
gnome-wm to gnome-shell

EDIT : Some more tweaks

Restart GNOME Shell by Alt, F2, then type r and press enter

export CLUTTER_VBLANK=none in .bashrc

I had 10.04, I had random freezes, posted on the already lengthy Ubuntu forum 1,400+ post, anyway, tried everything. Kept having random freezes, no clue on what was the prob. Switched to Mint 10, no freezes yet, had if for like 8ish months, it is a Ubuntu derivative, so the no freezing thing on the same system is confusing. I haven't updated my OS, I heard it starts freezing after that, so don't want that, I just web surf, nothing critical on the system.

Does it still have issues with wireless?

I tried it when it was first released and it crashed when I tried to connect to wireless. I couldn't even hold the power button to reset or switch off, I had to wait until the battery had run out....quite a scary experience.

Anyways...is it ok now?

I'm going back to 10.10 because it keeps dropping my wireless LAN within an hour of use and then cannot reconnect. If I don't use the computer the connection isn't dropped. It almost seems correlated with the amount of keystrokes I make!

The Unity interface of 11.04 really doesn't do it for me. It has very much a Mac OS X feel to it, with its toolbar welded to the top of the screen and default 'dock'. I don't mind Mac OS X, last year it took me some time to get used to using it in the office, having been using Ubuntu at home and previous work for a number of years but now I'm over the hump. Unity just feels like a bad implementation of the same principles.

I'm going back to 10.10 and from now I'm going to make a bit more use of either a Live CD to test things or a virtual machine to test an installation. Once I've got 10.10 back up and running I'll at least have a stable platform with decent window/GUI management to use while I decide what OS I use next. I really wanted to like Unity but it feels like it's stripped a lot of the control and access to the guts of the OS from me. Sure, everything can be done from the command line but I liked the old drop down menus at the top of the screen, including preferences and admin. The new interface seems squarely aimed at getting Ubuntu to be so friendly to new comers it ties your hands if you're already familiar with Ubuntu. I suppose it'll be great for getting Linux out into the massive mainstream market but it doesn't seem right.

Linux becoming massively popular is like the Lib Dems getting into power, it's their ultimate goal but when it happens you can't help but feel a bit betrayed.... :p
