i forgot about 48 and 30 :o

rebooted and still the same, i *think* GF4 graphic card doesnt support 100hz at 1280x1024, it arent important as 85hz is ok for me

but the colours are very dark

Oooo very nice, clean and compact XF86Config file :p All looks to be in good order to me. Your next job is to install the nvidia drivers from here. Make sure you read the howto here. This will enable hardware acceleration and hopefully improve your colours :)

Your card should support 100Hz and beyond at 1280x1024 :)

Whats a rough minimum spec for a Linux X-Windows based PC?

Thinking of throwing together a cheap rig to run linux on.

Whats ubuntu minimum spec?

Hey Mpemba Effect , would you be interested in installing and reviewing Yoper linux. Its installation is text based and takes about 12mins, runs very fast, uses apt-get, and uses the Suse config tool SAX2.

plus it would mean you help me out more when i get stuck (which is like every other day) lol.

i've just installed this too. :D

very close to chucking the pc out the window trying to get my usb modem to work. but i got there in the end. :p

i'm also after a quick fix for the annoying window behaviour in nautilus. it's just like windows 95, opening a new window for each folder you open, answers on a postcard please... :) i've looked at the obvious options but can't find anything...

There is no minimum spec, really, provided you have an x86 processor (you'd probably want to go for a celeron or duron). You can use other processor architectures, but x86 is the most common.

The minimum I ever ran linux on:

Pentium 1 133mhz
16mb RAM
8gb HDD

It didn't exactly whip along, but it never crashed, more than I could say for windows 95 at the time :)
 
note: You can get much, much lower than that and still run a decentish router/web server

I dont want to dilute this thread so will make a hardware related one in GD.

EDIT - Trying to install Ubuntu ona P166 with 96mb ram at the moment. This PC can run Win2k so I'm hoping it can run this!
EDIT - It's been on the Blue screen after you input the language and it detects IDE CD Drive for about 20minutes. The HDD light is on.

Think the probem isnt with Ubuntu as I get an opperand error when mandrake 10.0 tries to set up the cd drive.

(when it says press alt+F1 for log etc... at the bottom, that screen is when it errors and crashes)

Any ideas? Would prefer to get Ubuntu on there.
