Hello,

I have an HDD and when I go in ubutu it claims it has bad sectors, no other application reports any problems though.

It would explain why my windows wouldn't boot sometimes from that HDD (now reinstalled on SSD) and I think it corrupts my data as I keep getting Civilization 5 crashes over time and when I verify game cache there's always 1 file which fails and needs to be re-downloaded.

However, no other app reports any problems, smart data looks okay:

Code:
ID	Attribute Description	Threshold	Value	Worst	Data	Status
01	Raw Read Error Rate	51	200	200	38	OK: Value is normal
03	Spinup Time	21	158	154	5075	OK: Value is normal
04	Start/Stop Count	0	100	100	46	OK: Always passes
05	Reallocated Sector Count	140	200	200	0	OK: Value is normal
07	Seek Error Rate	51	200	200	0	OK: Value is normal
09	Power-On Time Count	0	80	80	14719	OK: Always passes
0A	Spinup Retry Count	51	100	253	0	OK: Value is normal
0B	Calibration Retry Count	51	100	100	0	OK: Value is normal
0C	Power Cycle Count	0	97	97	3003	OK: Always passes
C0	Power-Off Retract Count	0	200	200	198	OK: Always passes
C1	Load/Unload Cycle Count	0	199	199	3003	OK: Always passes
C2	Temperature	0	110	92	37	OK: Always passes
C4	Reallocation Event Count	0	200	200	0	OK: Always passes
C5	Current Pending Sector Count	0	200	200	2	OK: Always passes
C6	Offline Uncorrectable Sector Count	0	200	200	1	OK: Always passes
C7	Ultra ATA CRC Error Rate	0	200	200	0	OK: Always passes
C8	Write Error Rate	51	200	200	0	OK: Value is normal

Just made defraggler ''check drive for errors'' and it found none ( didn't do the windows one as it wants to unmount the drive and Steam is on that drive...).

Does the smart data look okay ? How come does Ubuntu say there are bad sectors but nothing else does ?

Have you run the manufacturers diagnostic tool? I would be inclined to trust that first. Just my 2 cents. I would guess the manufacturer knows more about testing for bad sectors than an open source OS tool that may not be able to read the SMART data properly.

Yup :( If it has failed with the WD tool then it's on the way out. Get backing up right now! How many drives do you have mind and perhaps run a full test over night.

Meh, I lack the necessary HDD space to do a full backup, I already have a backup of the more important things of it. But a full backup is a problem (O: is the failing drive) :

All I can hope is that the HDD holds on for a week longer till payday and new HDD time...
Stupid HDD to fail outside warranty ( have had issues with it since about 3 months after warranty expired, but I didn't know it was the HDD's fault back then I blamed my mainboard), only been running for 14720 hours too, I have an older WD HDD which has run far longer ( 27735 hours ) and is still Ok, quality is degrading of WD I guess...

For what it's worth I have found WD drives to be the best over the years and I have done many, many builds. Just bad luck I guess.

edit; Did Ubuntu actually report 'Disk has a few bad sectors' ?? lol! Can it be any more vague?
