That's not a great explanation.
- There are 4 groups of 9 (not 8) - you play 2 sides from pot 1, 2 sides from pot 2, 2 sides from pot 3 and 2 from pot 4 so it doesn't really matter where you're seeded, you're still going to get the same difficulty of matches regardless.
- The next point of difference is you don't play each side home and away. You will play one pot 1 side at home and 1 pot 1 side away and the same for the pot 2, 3 & 4 sides.
- The points totals from all the groups of 9 teams are then collated into a big 36 team League table. So how many points you get compared to the other sides in your group is irrelevant - in theory you could top your group but still not automatically qualify for the next round. All that matters is where your points total places you in the 36 team league table.
- Teams finishing 1st to 8th automatically qualify for the next round. 9th to 24th have to play a play-off and 25th to 36th are knocked out.
I know its not 8, 36/8 = 4.5. They've added 4 spots. I was trying to tie it to what were used to. You do have more bigger matches right from the start, it was literally part of the remit. More matches and more big games earlier on. Rather than say City playing RB, Crvena, Young Boys in the group they'll have a big match right from the start. And they could get a team from England, say Arsenal, which in the previous format didn't allow.
