UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread Finals ** spoilers ** [22/29 May 1st June 2024]

Madrid wouldn't survive in the Prem. You are looking at the Champions League as the pinnacle. It really isn't anymore. The Prem is. If it was a league format City or Liverpool would be winning it every year. Cup knockouts always end up with spawny winners.

Madrid only have to turn up 4 times a year in their league and can just rest for Champions League.

It’s impressive that you’re able to make it seem like you’re being genuine.

They’re able to beat city over two legs. This is like the 4th season in a row they’ve met. They’d stroll to victory against pretty much everyone in the league just like what city do.

Bit like Man U

Bit like every club that has more than a few hundred thousand fans. I've never understood this weird idea that you have to have been born outside a stadium to be a real fan of that club. Its a strange stick to beat people with. What are the rules? Are you allowed to support your local big team or should you be supporting just the nearest team that plays football. How far are you allowed to go before you have to support a team in that area? 5 miles? 10 miles? Are you allowed to support a team because you like watching them or is is purely locality that determines if you are allowed to support them.

Can you move away and still support that team? Is there an amount of time you have to have adhered to the above rules before you can support that club and how long are you allowed to support them if you move away?

They didn’t really beat City over 2 legs, it was two draws and then decided by pens. In a league setup they’d have two points each.

The original post I replied to said they bet less than 10% were from the area, I said Like Man U.

Man Utd have a supporters community of around 1.1billion fans and followers. So, RM will probably have somewhere in the 900-1b (not checked that figure) yeah you can safely say a low percentage will actually be from Madrid or Manchester in Utds case.,

So, they the best team in the league can’t beat them over two games. Share the points.

Madrid would smash everyone else. They’d be able to beat Liverpool and Arsenal as they can play more than one way as well.

They really wouldn't. RM rode their luck vs City and over the past few years in the CL have been utterly jammy and should have been dumped out pretty much every time, multiple times. The fact Dortmund outplayed RM until they scored should tell you that RM aren't that special.

Just reading up on next years format. Quite confusing!

There will now be a 36-team league phase, where all teams will be competing against each other in a single table. Clubs will play eight matches in the new league phase, against eight different teams, split evenly between home and away games.

To determine the eight different opponents, teams will be ranked in four seeding pots, as has been the case for many years. Each team will then be drawn to play two opponents from each of the pots, playing one match from each pot at home, and one away.
The results of each match will decide the overall ranking in the new league, with the usual three points for a win and one for a draw awarded.

The top eight sides in the league will qualify automatically for the round of 16, while those that finish 25th or lower will be eliminated. No teams from this season's Champions League will drop into the Europa League at any point.

At the end of the league phase, teams who finish on the same number of points will be separated by goal difference and goals scored. If another tiebreaker is needed, then the total points gained by the tied clubs' eight opponents are added up, effectively creating a difficulty level that will determine who had the toughest path.

The teams finishing in 9th to 24th place will compete in a two-legged play-off to secure their path to the last 16 of the Champions League. Those who finish between 9th and 16th will be seeded, and face one of the teams who finished 17th to 24th, with the second leg at the seeded team’s ground.

The eight play-off winners will then face one of the seeded top-eight finishers in the round of 16, when the competition returns to its traditional two-legged knockout method, albeit with a set bracket, meaning no more draws are needed and teams will be able to see their routes to the final.

Just imagine the traditional groups of 4 being a group of 8. Teams that traditionally finished 3rd in those groups will play each other to go through to the last 16 rather than drop down into Europa.

You're basically getting more breath and more 'big' games in the groups stages

That's not a great explanation.
  • There are 4 groups of 9 (not 8) - you play 2 sides from pot 1, 2 sides from pot 2, 2 sides from pot 3 and 2 from pot 4 so it doesn't really matter where you're seeded, you're still going to get the same difficulty of matches regardless.
  • The next point of difference is you don't play each side home and away. You will play one pot 1 side at home and 1 pot 1 side away and the same for the pot 2, 3 & 4 sides.
  • The points totals from all the groups of 9 teams are then collated into a big 36 team League table. So how many points you get compared to the other sides in your group is irrelevant - in theory you could top your group but still not automatically qualify for the next round. All that matters is where your points total places you in the 36 team league table.
  • Teams finishing 1st to 8th automatically qualify for the next round. 9th to 24th have to play a play-off and 25th to 36th are knocked out.

The only thing I don't like about it is the unbalance between home and away. Playing the top ranked team in a group away and the bottom ranked team home or vice verse feels like a pretty big difference to me.

It's not going to be the case of playing Real at home and then Bologna away or vice versa. It'll be Real at home and PSG away as you play 2 sides from every pot.

Yes there could be some small advantage/disadvantage if you ended up in a group with Real & Leipzig from pot 1 as there's a more material difference in quality there but once you go through who you get home/away from pots 2, 3 & 4 as well, the likelihood is there's not going to be any major (dis)advantage to be had.

I don't believe they're doing this and I'd imagine it's far more complicated than it seems once you factor in 36 teams etc but it would be fair(er) if sides that played the higher ranked pot 1 side at home then played the higher ranked pot 2 & 3 sides away and then the higher ranked pot 4 side at home.
