UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [3rd - 5th May 2022]

You described me twice in there. I'm both a United fan and I don't want anyone else to win anything because my club is rubbish.

To be fair to Liverpool, even at United peak I never expected us to do well in Europe. We usually had to fight tooth and nail to get anywhere past the group stages in the CL because English football was so far behind the top European sides. It was always a tactical battle to beat team rather than relying on our strength and quality.

Must be nice playing in Europe and expecting to win.

Anyway, back on topic. I just hope the final is a good game because I fear that RM will be swept aside.

They have had huge slices of luck to get this far and even then they have only scraped through a few times over 2 legs. I think in a single game they won't be good enough. Last nights game was complete tosh until the last few minutes of the game. I think RM will take the same tactics into the final unfortunately.
Madrid will surely have to change up their tactics for the final, they can't rely on riding their luck all the way to winning the trophy. If they play as they have done in the last 16/qf/sf, only turning up in 15 minute spells in each game we should be crowned champs on the 28th. Should be a great occasion regardless.

I couldn't care less that fans of other teams will be routing for RM, we all know it's just based in envy ;)

I thought when I said there would be a public service announcement playing YNWA that people would have realised I was taking the **** :p

In all seriousness though, while I have no doubt that every Utd fan will be supporting Madrid in the CL and City in the League, and similarly those bitter neutrals will too, I'm sure, even if they don't admit it, almost all supporters are and will be more than a bit envious and respect what Liverpool have built.

Every summer half the people on this forum award City the title before a ball has been kicked and had it not been for Liverpool there wouldn't have been a title race for the past 4 seasons. We are proof that all teams should be able to compete (relative to their size obviously) regardless of a rival having more money.
I used to get a 3 hour long ‘public service message’ every time Liverpool lost a significant game ( My neighbour at the time was a mad pool fan) so I learnt quickly to hope they one every game so we would get peace!

I am reading that and thinking Liverpool have the budget of Burnley Baz!
Everything is relative, as I said. Yes we spend more than most but we're not spending close to what clubs we're competing with spend.

It would be easy, as some Utd supporters have (weirdly), to just accept that we can't compete with City's money but we haven't. We've gone toe to toe with them for the past 4 years despite them spending far more than us.

And my point was regarding the club as a whole too. We weren't in the position to spend what we're spending today, 10 years ago. The club has been incredibly well run, to the point that we will likely have the biggest revenue in the League this season. For years we saw Arsenal stand still, almost accepting their place as also runs rather than strive to bridge the gap to the sides above them. There was nothing stopping Arsenal achieving all the things we've achieved except their ambition to do it.

Football is all a cycle I’m sure someone will remind you of this post in a few years when Liverpool are on the downhill section! Enjoy it while it lasts as a Liverpool fan you will be well aware how quickly you can be back in the wilderness!

I've never understood this point. If football is a cycle how come x have never become a top side or why have Real or Bayern not become terrible?

Clubs don't become successful or unsuccessful because of some random cycle. It's determined by how much resources they have and how well they use them. Liverpool were incredibly poorly run in the 90s and that's why we suffered. When Utd were commercialising the **** out of everything Liverpool stood still, because selling branded rubbish supposedly wasn't the Liverpool way. The club failed to take advantage of the Premier League boom commercially nor by expanding the stadium and we were left behind.

And why does the possibility of Liverpool not being successful in the future change what I said? What Liverpool have done over the past 5-6 years has been hugely successful. We've expanded the stadium to (soon to be) 61k, built a brand new training ground and produced a world class side without any oil money. If and when the club start making stupid decisions in the future they will fail but that won't make what they've done in this period worse

Liverpool were in a downhill section after being the most successful side in English football history and then selling the club to a pair of Canutes. Once they had been run out of town, the club was fortunately very well run and managed.

Final should be interesting. I think the TAA vs Vinicius will be one to watch, especially as TAA can be a bit dodge at the back.

Liverpool to go 2-0 up and on keeping with the theme, Benzema goes super sayan and grabs a hat trick.

Liverpool is ran well because you have the best manager in world football. Just like Fergie once he leaves there will be a whole chasm left behind. City were also a bit of a mess before Guardiola as well. They won a title on goal difference and capitalised on a retiring legend.

Liverpool still had the same owners and background before Klopp joined and were terrible.

Manchester United became the richest club in the world under the Glazers and under their stewardship have won 1 Fa Cup, 4 League Cups, 1 Champions league & 2 Finals, 1 Europa League, 5 Premier Leagues. By that metric it makes them good owners but no it was all down to the Management.

Your owners put Roy Hodgeon in charge for Christ sake.

I agree we have the best manager in the world but the club had put the foundations in place before his arrival. Our recruitment is 2nd to none and the team behind that was there pre Klopp. The work improving the commercial side of the club was being done pre Klopp, likewise the expansion of the stadium.

As good as Klopp is, without us recruiting the right players and having the funds to recruit the right players, we'd not be nearly the side that we are. And let's remember, every club wanted Klopp but he chose us and one of the reasons why was because of the ownership and structure around him. It's well documented that he turned Utd down because he didn't want to work in a circus or as Ed Woodward put it, Disney land for adults.

And while I agree that replacing Klopp will be a huge challenge, it won't be the same as Utd with Fergie because unlike Utd, we don't have 1 man running the entire football side of the club.

And no, they didn't hire Hodgson. They sacked him months after they arrived.

Liverpools recruitment is top notch if united had been nearly as good we would still be up there challenging for titles and cups but unfortunately our recruitment is the worst in the league all that money wasted if Liverpool had spent the money we have the league would have been wrapped up by now

Liverpool have announced details of tickets for the CL final. In a 80k seater stadium, each finalist will receive just over 19,500 tickets :o Once Liverpool have dished out tickets to sponsors, players and past shareholders (they're legally obliged for the latter), I doubt there will be much more than 13k going to supporters.

Its sick isn't it? So many people who don't give a toss getting tickets, far more should be going to the Liverpool and Real Madrid Fans

I would have wanted West Ham to do well but a combination of Moyes being weird and the Zouma incident means... nah.
