UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [7th - 9th November 2023]

Yeah Varane has won nothing

The pen was a dumb decision too but we've been on the losing side of a number of those now. CL refs have no idea what a handball is, player smashes into the defender from a foot away clear handball.

I think the Maguire one is a penalty, he just bungs his arm in where the ball is bouncing around. Stupid. And I feel sorry for him, he's shown huge character lately but that was moronic. Even Scholes isn't trying to defend it

How can you possibly be looking at both your feet are at all times though? We're just saying that if you step on a player now by accident it is an instant red? That is ******* stupid, have you lost your minds?

Soon as anything negative happens players heads drop bunch of tarts.

Not a sending off Rashford is protecting the ball can't give that.

Eh? He's not just stepped on a player by accident, he's gone in on the guy's ankle. Yes, it's an accident, but I expect that 90% of red cards are. It's pretty rare nowadays that somebody goes in deliberately to do someone.

Did you think the Jones one earlier this season was correct?

If it's the one I'm thinking of then no. And no he's just stepped on a player by accident, that is literally what it is. He's not even looking at the guy.

It absolutely shouldn’t be a red but this is what the modern game has become. So we shouldn’t be surprised/shocked it was given.

Not really any different to smashing someone in the face with an elbow when jumping for a header.
You can not even know the other guy is there but if you’re endangering another player then it’s a red. Accident or otherwise.

It’s unfortunate and completely unintentional but it’s just a risk you take.

In an ideal world I'd agree, but that's modern football. The onus is now on players to ensure that they don't do anything dangerous. In the old days, you had to not do something intentionally dangerous. Nowadays you have to proactively avoid doing anything dangerous, intentional or not.
