UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [7th - 9th November 2023]

Yeah it's been poor so far, but there are some pretty huge extenuating circumstances. We've had to deal with more off the field stuff than any manager I've ever seen has had to deal with. And I'll say again, replace him with who? There isn't a single good manager available.

Dortmund guy?

Dortmund guy?
Don't know much about him but he's got almost no experience and has never won anything beyond a German cup. How would he be better? I'm not sure hiring the guy who managed to choke the easiest league victory last year is a good idea.

The reality is that Man Utd is now a mid table club. If they want to get back to the top they need to understand where they currently are and plan with that in mind.

They have been slipping back further and further over the last ten years and keep on acting as if they were competing with Real Madrid.

The club keeps on trying to sign players out of their league and signing players who are joining for the wrong reasons.

Nearly won the Bundesliga when he had no right, top of the group of death, he's 41. Dunno, maybe worth sitting up and noticing things like that.

Nothing will happen until Ratcliffe has his team in place, then we'll see. I think he'll demand a pretty sharp upturn in results, regardless of injuries.

I have some sympathy for ETH and don't blame him entirely, but if he's lost the players (and they are useless), he's toast.

I think the reason is Varane can't play on the left and Maguire has looked better on the right. Varane doesn't look fully fit (neither did AWB tbh, he was running far slower tonight)

Pretty much this. Maguire is hopeless playing on the left of CB and has been reasonably solid on the right. Varane cannot play on the left hence using Johnny Evans instead.

Normally with Martinez injured Shaw would cover that LCB spot and Malacia come in at LB. With all 3 out at once it has left us in a very bad place which everyone seems to ignore.

No different to when Liverpool fell off a cliff for two seasons. I fully expect Man Utd to come back strong when players come back if ETH is still there which I hope he is.

No right? He choked the easiest final day of the season ever and couldn't beat a Bayern with no striker.

If we're gambling on inexperience I'd rather get Amorim but it would be another complete rebuild.

Varane came on and was terrible - ETH has seemingly fallen out with him. No way Evans would start ahead of him otherwise.
I’m not sure he’s fallen out with him I just reckon he doesn’t think Varane suits being stuck with Maguire or Evans beside him.

The team choked you mean, i don't see how it's the managers fault when you're top of the league for the season and then suddenly on the final day can't get over the line. If ETH was sacked, you wouldn't say no to De Zerbi would you? He's 44

Nah I watched that game, his game management was dreadful. If he can't hack it at Dortmund with zero pressure he'd crash and burn here. Even if De Zerbi would come how would he do any better here than Potter at Chelsea? The reason that club is doing well (and they're not even playing well lately) is because of the infrastructure, not the manager.

That's a different thing, don't disagree the club needs to sort out the off field stuff if you want to get back to the very top. But there are options out there if UTD decide to get rid of ETH

None of them are good though, hell none of them are better than ETH. This is different to when we were moving on from OGS. There is never a point in sacking a manager if you don't have a better option to go to unless you're facing relegation. We can't keep claiming we want a rebuild then sacking a manager every 18 months.

I've not called for him to go, I was simply responding to your post where you excused ETH for today's game but ignored the other dozen plus games where you've been poor and contributed to the calls for him to go.

As Carragher said during his debate with Neville the other week, as bad as your owners are etc etc, there's plenty of things that are still in his control and he should be doing so much better than he is. Utd have got progressively worse over the past 12 months and ETH is responsible for his signings, his work on the training ground and the way he sets the side up and this Utd side looks more lost and confused than any Utd side I can remember. Whether it's the decision to spend so much on Mount when he wasn't needed (or at least shouldn't have been a priority), Maguire going from being pushed out the door to starting every week (alongside Evans) while Varane is benched, making Fernandes captain, picking fights with players, it's just a shambles and these are all things he's responsible for.

This is definitely the case. EtH said as much, that MAguire cannot receive the ball playing on the left, he just doesn't have the mobility. That's undoubtedly why Evans got the shout in the last couple of games. However regardless of the combinations we've conceded 3, 3, 0 , 4 in our last four matches.

Such as? Who do you think would actually want the job right now?

Maguire wasn't pushed out of the door. ETH said all summer he'd be happy if he stayed but would understand if he wanted to leave to play regularly. He's playing because we've got an injury crisis what are you talking about? Fernandes captain, who should be captain? Picking fights with players? You mean Sancho being a ****? What a load of nonsense you've just wrote Baz.
