UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [9th - 11th March 2021]

Porto aren't much better than the team Liverpool hammered, it's just Juventus are on the decline due to an aging squad and, what appears to be, a poor manager.

11 vs 10 for over half the game yet it felt like Porto were a man up.

That was shocking from Ronaldo and his Juventus team mates last night, I've never seen a wall disintegrate so fast. Last 16 of the Champions League and they throw the tie away by being scared of the ball hitting them.

There is a difference between the players that are still going strong in their mid 30's and those that aren't its obviously genetics and how well they take care of themselves but its also their ability to adapt and still have that hunger for the game. Ibra is a prime example of that. Guy will be 40 in 6 months!

Disagree. Aging players still playing well are because they are intelligent footballers. They make up for their bodies waning by using their natural talent and intelligence. Ibra never relied on his pace and the way he has held up makes him a legend of the game. Likewise Owen was nothing without his pace even though he was an incredibly gifted footballer.

Like the Liverpool team tonight. Two central defenders, Fabinho in midfield and hopefully sitting alongside Gini with Thiago free to get forward and create chances for Salah, Mane and Jota. This is the team I want to see until Henderson, VVD and Gomez are back.

Two central defenders.
I think you're being generous calling them that but yea, the team certainly looks more balanced having Fabinho back in the defensive midfield role. Unlike you, I don't want Gini sitting next to him. I want him back in his number 8 role pressing the opposition because not having him (and Henderson) there has been as big a miss as our CB's. The question is whether getting Fab & Gini back into their favoured positions compensate for having 2 car crashes at CB.

In the game between Dortmund vs Sevilla, a Sevilla player was pulling a Dortmund player's shirt in the penalty box which was going to be reviewed when play stopped but before play stopped, Dortmund scored a goal in open play which was eventually disallowed for a foul. What would've happened to the penalty review if the disallowed goal was allowed to stand?

What we gain from having one or both of Fabinho and Henderson at CB, compared to the options available to us, we lose much more from our midfield game imo. We coped ok while Henderson was ahead of Fabinho but the second we lost both from midfield we lost the ability to cover the defense, control the pace of the game and press.

I don't mind if Gini plays his natural role as long as Thiago doesn't have any defensive duties tbh.

Edit: Even with a massive bench in the CL, we don't have much strength and depth do we.

Agreed. We already have a weakened defence. By playing our best midfielders in defence, we still have a weakened defence but now we also have a weakened midfield which hamper the supply to the attackers.
