UEFA Champions League and Europa League Knockout Games **Spoilers**

He showed his credentials tonight

Your going straight back down next season btw.

Looking at this in a positive light. 3rd in the league and to get to the Semi's in all our available comps I would have taken that at the beginning of the season. I think the problem is United fans get their hopes up far too much for what we actually can do at this present moment. We had nothing on the bench to change the game today. Sancho needs to get done and dusted as well as some other signings.

Can’t believe we’ve had our worst season in years and still won more trophies than Man U, spurs and Chelsea. Bloody glorious :D

how many trophies do you normally win in a season because any trophy for Arsenal is a good season for about the last 15 years...

This is what is so depressing about football - certain clubs can just fling cash at the problem when they are poor.

The BT sport's commentators just expecting man utd to add to the £520m they have spent over the past 4 seasons to try and get better. They haven't been good forbfor almost a decade and yet they have unlimited cash. The disproportionate resources between clubs competing in the same competition is disgusting.

£500mil!!!!

They've got to be up there with City and Barca for poor recruitment. I'm not surprised Ole is reluctant to make changes when you look at their bench.

People forget we lost to a Spanish side that was equal on points to third place in la Liga and had a massive unbeaten run. Tonight's game was one of those 50:50 that could have gone either way. That 10-15 after the first half is what cost us as we missed many chances that should have gone in but that's what happens in knockout football. I would argue we had far the best chances over the 90 minutes but it only takes 5 seconds of poor defending for it to all go wrong.

Also people moan about United spending but it is not only their own doing. The big clubs almost pay a tax on players that lower clubs do not have too. Just look at the Sancho saga. Man Utd are in that position where they just have to stump up the cash because other teams know they can afford it.

We haven't spent that amount in four seasons for starters, unless you're just ignoring sales for some reason. We're just paying the price for both the years of underinvestment before Fergie retired and the poor investment in the years after that.

Very quickly using Transfermarkt's figures, Utd's net spend has been around £450m in the last 4 seasons so the posts above aren't far wrong. As for paying the price for underinvestment pre Fergie retiring, that was 7 years ago! Very few sides will have more than a handful of players (Liverpool for example only have 1) still at their clubs since then. 7 years is more than enough time to rebuild a squad and in that period Utd have spent literally hundreds of millions more than most sides and very similar amounts to sides such as City. You've just spent incredibly badly.

450 is quite a long way off 520 even if those are correct (which transfermarkt is hardly reliable)

And yes it's almost like I said we'd spent badly, partially because we hired 3 managers who played 3 different styles of football and wanted 3 different types of squad. But it's clear in the years that followed Fergie leaving that he achieved a great deal with a rapidly aging and under invested squad.

Transfermarkt is fairly decent and if anything they've been slightly conservative on the fees Utd have paid. For example, they've listed Lindelof at €35m when we know (because Benfica released the details) that was just the guaranteed element of his fee with a further €10m in add-ons. They've done the same for Fernandes, only accounting for the €55m guaranteed part of his fee and we know at least €5m in bonuses have already been triggered. With those add-ons included, Utd probably have spent the £520m figure. If you don't want to believe transfermarkt then you could just look at Utd's official accounts - these will have a little bit of overlap with payments on previous deals but still, Utd have averaged around £130m net per season in the 3 seasons prior to this and £100m net per season in the 2 prior to that. In fact if you look at the 6 sets of accounts since Fergie left, Utd have spent £660m net with this seasons still to be added on. And before anybody questions these figures, they're from Utd's audited accounts.

Utd have spent, give or take £500m over the last 4 seasons - it might be £20-30m higher or lower than that (I suspect higher) but it doesn't change the underlying point.

And I wasn't questioning the changes of manager etc, just the idea that any issues with investment 7+ years ago have any bearing on the side now. As I said, we've built almost an entire squad in that period and I suspect most sides will have too, and in that period Utd have spent at least as much as anybody else and considerably more than the vast majority.

Can't say I have any sympathy for utd; normally I'd be rooting for the English team but not after the abuse some of you gave wolves the other night :D

AWB basically means we play with 10.5 men. He gives us some decent defence on occasion, but literally offers nothing else. How can he not develop his game beyond that? I remember someone saying he gets a nosebleed after the halfway line, it’s so true!

And agree Robbo, think Pogba did one decent pass which Rashford then fluffed as always and just jogged to keep his jog stats up.

Hi,

I hope you're well.

That was me.

Kind regards

Omnom (professional ref)

The squad just isn't good enough unfortunately, especially the back four. AWB is usually resolute in defending, but doesn't offer anything out wide going forward. Brandon Williams needs to go out on load as he just isn't first team quality yet at all, he lacks both defensively and going forward. Daniel James, well, I wouldn't even say going on loan would help as I can't see any prospects in him at all... he just, runs?

Buying Jadon Sancho isn't going to plug any of these issues unless he somehow makes us into Barcelona of yesteryear where they would just simply score more than they conceded, clearly that isn't going to happen. I honestly want to see Bailly getting a chance along side Maguire, I know he can be rash but I think his positional play is fantastic, he's good with his feet and he's not slow either.

Apart from the two goals last night then sure. Maguires in no mans lands aswell tbf

In all seriousness what did people expect? Ole doesnt have a clue. Like ive said in other threads....for all the Neville esque orgasm commentary Bruno gets hes been poor. Last night wasnt his worst game in fairness but hes an absolute tart when it comes to any kind of defending. He loses possession a lot, never wins it and loves a ridiculous shot for it to be blocked or fly over the bar.
