I don't know, it depends on how it happened. If you get dodgy penalties given against you, missed VAR calls that would give you goals, penalties etc. That didn't happen against AM though. They rode their luck a bit and did what AM did best.

Honestly that was no where near what AM do best, or did best rather when they were a great team. They conceded twice and relied on poor finishing + gifted a goal which killed the game.

That said they still defended really well against a relentless Liverpool team that just couldn't finish. Oblak/Savic/Partey are class + Llorente's clinical finishing tbf to him. The rest weren't up to much

Battered them, only difference was Oblak.

He made some good saves but if Liverpool didn't keep missing the target I doubt he would have kept them all out. Madrid got battered but then took their chances in ruthless fashion. They did what English teams were doing a few years ago, it doesn't matter how you win.

Dying at Klopp wanting Atletico go toe-to-toe. Same tired, patronising lines as Pep.

Atleti deservedly through. Shame it’ll probably mask the many issues at that club at the moment.

Never understand this. Football is like a game of rock, paper scissors. Klopp is basically wanting the team to play to his strengths. He should change his formation to beat them or find a way to break them down.

Pep was exactly the same when we played them.

Which goal were they gifted. All three of their goals were well taken regardless of whether your keeper made a mistake in his clearance. Most goals in football come from a mistake on the part of a defender or the keeper. If anything, Liverpools second goal was very lucky.

This AM team isn't a vintage example of their style of football but they did their jobs as well as they could. Their defence is half what it was 3-4 years ago.

It was Pools finishing that was the problem. Oblak made some decent saves but nothing top class. You just peppered him with a lot of poor quality shots that a keeper of his class is always going to save. I just watched the highlights again and Oblak makes maybe one top class save amid a sea of run of the mill ones.

I understand what Klopp is saying, because Atletico had zero intention to even try and be pro-active. There's a difference between playing defensive, counter-attacking football and playing with the intention of just trying to hold on. It's cowards football really and they should be out of the competition - relying on an opponent making a mistake was their only get out.

That said, you have to find a way to win and Liverpool's main issue was their finishing. Oblak had a good game, yes, but the chances were there and in multiple not to mention the individual errors which eventually cost the game. Oblak wasn't the difference, that's an excuse.

Playing more expansive football doesn’t entitle you to a win. Never has and it never will.

Liverpool just weren’t good enough at both ends of the pitch and got punished for it. Which is exactly what Atletico wanted.

The difference was Adrian - with Alisson in goal we qualify, it's really that simple. Atletico knew they'd get battered if they tried to go toe to toe with us so their tactics were to sit as deep as possible and hope for the best. 99 times out of 100 we still win but in this case our finishing wasn't quite up to it, Oblak played exceptionally well and Adrian didn't. Sometimes in football **** happens.

Wasn’t Alisson in goal for the first leg?

Yes and?

The game wasn't decided in the 1st leg and there was nothing that could have been done, from a goalkeeping pov, for their goal in the 1st leg. We lost the game as a result of the goals we conceded in the 2nd leg. Even ignoring the mistake with the clearance, Adrian's positioning for all 3 goals was terrible. Alisson saves all 3 of those.

I just wondered :p I agree he saves them but it’s all speculative, the game likely wouldn’t have played out exactly the same.

Atletico did win both legs. They were always going to be a pain to play against.

I'm not sure what plays out differently, other than Alisson not making those mistakes, had he been in goal instead of Adrian. The pattern of the game wouldn't have changed, other than Liverpool wouldn't have been chasing the game in the 95th minute onwards which contributed to their 2nd and 3rd goals on the night.

Not convinced Allison does save all three of those. If he lets in one of those you still lose. Maybe he makes a mistake elsewhere in the game as well. What do you think City fans would have been saying after the United game if their backup keeper had made the mistakes that Ederson made? "Ederson wouldn't have made those mistakes". Its always easy to decide how differently the game would have gone when you are talking hypotheticals.

First of all the "if he lets in one of those..." argument is nonsense. Liverpool aren't defending on the half way line deep into extra time if we're not chasing the game. Secondly I'm not too sure what your point is, that Alisson in goal wouldn't have made a difference? Of course we'll never know for certain what would happen but it's hardly a stretch to say that Alisson in goal would have highly likely made a noticeable difference to the outcome of the game. He's the best keeper in the world for a reason. His inclusion over Adrian wouldn't have changed the pattern of the game right up until Atletico's first goal. Atletico's game plan would have been the same and I can't recall Adrian having to do too much prior to their goal other than one fairly easy save early in the game which he fumbled and nearly cost us a goal.

Their first goal on the night was terrible from Adrian and the killer goal. It's not only far far less likely that Alisson makes that same initial mistake than Adrian but it's even less likely that he doesn't save the shot. All the comments about that goal are focussed on Adrian's clearance but that sort of thing can happen from time to time during games but his attempt at saving the shot was far worse imo. His positioning for all 3 goals was terrible, something Alisson excels at, and none of the goals were attempts that you'd except a top class keeper not to save, the first of which should have been a very easy save.
