UEFA Champions League/Europa League 12/13/14 April *** Spoilers ***

Spurs are gona get spanked tonight again. Don't get me wrong they did well for a first time in CL... but it was just a matter of time.

Real vs Barca next round, now thats a tie.

I have a good feeling about Spurs tonight. I reckon they can pull it off. They will, from the first whistle, attack and go with all guns blazing.

Going to be a good game.

I'm going to tonight's match at the Lane. Although I knew we'd loose the tie outright, I'm gutted we're not going into tonight's game with a chance rather than none. All we can hope for is a fast opening 10 minutes; Bale and Lennon running at defenders with a penalty and sending off at the start.. The way I see it, Spurs will give it a go in the opening 30 minutes, then the likes of Bale will be brought off and rested.

Really, only 1 player?

Even if Cole, Lampard, Anelka and Drogba went back in time, they still need a RB (Bosingwa's crap and Ivanovic is a CB) and at least 2 wingers/attacking midfielders; 1 of which that could walk straight into the first team.

Ivanovic is a much better RB than he is a CB though

--------------Cech--------------
Ivanovic---Luiz---Terry---Cole
--------------Essien--------------
---Ramires----------Lampard
Anelka-----------------????
--------------Torres--------------

Subs: Turbull, Alex, Zhirkov, Benayoun, Sturridge, ???, ???

Okay maybe you're right, maybe they do need more than just 1 player, I was only thinking about the starting XI rather than the whole squad. You could argue though that the likes of Bosingwa, Mikel, Malouda & Kalou are good enough for squad players though

That works assuming you rate Ramires as anything other then complete garbage.

I was quite concerned when they signed him to begin with tbh after the performances he put in at the WC, it took him a few months to settle but he's progressed very well over the course of the season, I think he's going to be a great player for them.

I think he'd easily get in the midfields of all the other teams in the premiership

Ivanovic does a job at RB but he's a CB by trade and you can see that when he tries to go forward. And yes I was talking about their squad as a whole.

They can't rely on Lampard and Anelka for much longer and haven't got any natural successors to them in their squad. Even if you get another year out of Lampard, will he replicate last seasons form again? I very much doubt it.

haha drunkenmaster has a point about people banging on about an old Chelsea squad when united are desperate to hang on to Scholes and Giggs as they don't have anyone else capable, and how old are those two?

Giggs and Scholes are in a different class to what we are talking about with Chelsea.

Giggs last night was immense, 3 assists in the CLQF at 37 :D The sad part of all that is I remember him making his debut :(

Loved how Rio pinged the ball about with his left for the second half because of his knock :D

Giggs and his first touch, im sure he wasnt doing that 10 years ago!

The other issue is that if we get to the final vs Barca and lose again, then fergie will be 2 wins 2 losses in CL finals... 50 percentage:/ Oh if only we'd beaten Porto.

Utd don't rely on Scholes and Giggs. They're used sparingly with Taggart picking and choosing which games they play.

Chelsea on the other hand are hugely reliant on their old guard and with the exception of Drogba (with the signing of Torres) and Terry (Luiz/Ivanovic), they have no obvious replacements for Cole, Lampard and Anelka - 3 key players of their side.

Going back to Utd; Ferguson has always lined up replacements for players before they need replacing (VDS the only exception as it's nigh on impossible to have a ready made replacement keeper waiting in the wings). Ferdinand's on his way out - they have Smalling waiting to step in, Giggs is/was on his way out - they brought in Nani and Valencia. Scholes is the only 1 that they're probably still looking to find a successor for but not through a lack of trying; Carrick and then Anderson I assume were earmarked to replace Scholes. You can go back throughout Taggart's time at Utd or look at the Liverpool sides of the 70's and 80's; their longterm success was due to the near seamless transition in their sides.

Robbed against Porto :(

Agreed!

I think if United do make it to the final they can beat Barcelona as I put earlier in thread they have 4 huge games against Real in such a short space they can't afford to rest any of there starting 11 for about 4 weeks!

If Carlo goes, which is likely who till take over? :s

Van Gaal got sacked last weekend so a possibility I suppose.

Would be a shame of Carlo does go look at his first season he had Chelsea playing great football, scoring for fun in a system that suited them all.

This season been plenty of injuries to key players, a £50m signing he must be under immense pressure to play which in turn means he doesn't know how best to play his team.

I would HATE to be a manager, the stress must be unreal could not imagine what it must be like at times

Luckily Fergie IS United and he can't feel the same pressure as rival managers who are trying to compete at the very top.
