UEFA Champions League/Europa League 15/16/17 March *** Spoilers ***

He was but nearer end he was more wide or so it seemed, Before this game i fear Reina was off anyway tbh. 6th is good considering we were in the bottom three at on point but obv not good enough for us as a club i just hope we spend in summer cause we need to spend fairly big.

Certainly earlier in the season it looked like we might struggle to finish in the top 10 and who knows, if the fa cup goes to Manchester then 6th will put us into Europe. I think we knew beforehand that we needed 4-6 decent signings, so Suarez and Carroll was always going to be a step in the right direction rather than the total solution. Tonight has shown we still need to remedy the other problem areas , like left back, wings , creativity and impo a central defender.

We may have to make do with 6th and hope someone useful wins the fa cup. Going to be nigh on impossible to keep Reina in the summer with no European football I fear.

Not sure but i think there is now no chance that the league will get another europa league place. Looks like Man utd/City will be in the Champions league so will either go to Bolton or Stoke.

No it won't. The Europa spot for the FA cup goes to the runner up if the winner has already qualified for Europe. It's either 5th place or the fair play league if we're going to be in Europe next season.

Are you quite sure? Because according to the European qualification rules I read we have 4 champions league slots and 3 Europa league slots, the Europa league ones going to either 5th, fa cup winner and carling cup winner, or 5th, 6th and 7th if the cup winners have already qualified via other means. It even stated that the slot doesn't go to the runner up but to the league position instead.

"The team placed fifth in the Premier League automatically qualifies for the UEFA Europa League, and the sixth and seventh-placed teams can also qualify, depending on the winners of the two domestic cup competitions. If one of the cup winners qualifies for Europe through their league position, the sixth-placed team in the Premier League will qualify for the Europa League."

I'm certain. The FA Cup runners up get the EL spot if the winners have already qualified for Europe.

We would have missed out last year too had Pompey not gone into administration.

They need to update their rules then as they have them written wrong :)

Edit : ah wait, hang on, its only the carling cup whose runner up doesn't go into Europe.

In that case we are pretty much screwed for Europe. That's pretty bad news.

I guess so. I haven't checked UEFA's site but I'm certain that the runners up are given the FA Cup spot. It's not the case with the League Cup though; had Arsenal won the League cup then the EL spot for that competition would have gone to the league.

I actually think we will have a tough job keeping hold of reina in the summer then. He might stay but I think its going to take quite some persuasion to keep him, especially with teams like utd and possibly arsenal (hell maybe even chelsea) on the lookout for a shiny new keeper.

While it's certainly possible, it's far from certain that he'll go imo. As I said a bit earlier, it's going to take a bid of £20m before he'll even have a decision to make and how many clubs will realistically pay £20m for a keeper? The club have to show they match his ambition though and I'm hopefuly they will.

I agree its not certain, to be honest though, I don't think utd, chelsea or even arsenal would worry too much about spending 20m on Reina, I think they would all be happy to pay that. Hopefully we will manage to keep hold of him, because there really aren't all that many decent keepers available (something which also might make those teams consider that the price for a proven epl keeper in Reina is ok)

We'll have to wait and see, but I definately think its a story we are going to see run and run all through the summer.

£20m is a lot of money for a keeper. IINM, only once has a keeper gone for over £20m. We all know Wenger's views on transfer fees so it will take a big turnaround for Arsenal to pay that much (although there were reports that they bid in the summer). It's far from certain whether Utd can afford to pay £20m on a keeper and even less certain that the Glazers will allow Fergie to spend over the odds on players anymore. And even if Cech isn't the keeper he was, I can't see Chelsea replacing him.

edit: You'd also hope Cecil wasn't stupid enough to not exclude Utd from any clause that may exist. And again, this is all assuming he were to want to leave and was willing to join certain clubs.

Well 20m is the clause of course , but I wonder what would happen if Reina stuck in a transfer request. Maybe he might be able to go for 15m then , I could see them paying that for Reina happily. Ultimately though as I say, we just don't know what will happen, all we can do is wait and see.
