UEFA Champions League/Europa League 21/22/23 February *** Spoilers ***

Yet another story involving AVB and being a bad manager seems to come out after every game, win or lose. This time he apparently ASKED for opinions after the last game, then dropped the three most vocal players, Cole, Lampard and Essien....... worked out well that did.

Little man complex, nothing more or less, worked in a little league with little competition, not working without the best team in a much better league, not surprising.

I find this quite surprising as he doesn't strike me as a moron (not that his interviews really mean anything).

as SAF has been saying for years , Chelsea are seriously ageing in all the wrong places, with adequate (rather than quality) replacements in some areas who need to get accustomed to the team

Terry, Lampard and Drogba (and arguably Cech) are on their last legs, with Torres unable to score more than a couple every few months. Sturridge may well turn out brilliant in the long run, but his inexperience also shines through (cant be helped, rather than anything he should be blamed for), a few seasons ago his form now would have probably helped them to a third title in a row - but now....

New ways of playing (tactics etc), ageing lengs, squad players that are in the 1st XI (Luiz, Bosingwa etc etc) , unlike Silva Mata isnt imo a game changer on his own (brilliant individual goals on occasion not withstanding), very decent player to have - maybe this is getting aclimbatized to Chelsea/AVB also - but there is too much dross around him at the same time

Essien certainly was a brillaint player, but its showing how long he was out for and whether he will ever get back to his best wont be known until next season at the earliest (plus he isnt exactly a youngster any more either)

Because Chelsea are more than likely going to conceed at least one in the return, to go through they have to score 4 at the very least. Sorry, this is never going to happen unless Napoli get a few red's for some reason. Chelsea are as effectively out as Arsenal are (without a minor miracle, like Torres finding consistant form)

RIP Chelsea. Don't see them keeping a clean sheet at the Bridge which would mean they need to score a lot of goals.

Scoring a lot of goals doesn't seem to be in Chelsea's book right now.

With Arsenal already gone barring a miracle, and Chelsea looking likely to follow, is this poor europe performance this season going to affect our 4 spots?

It takes more than one bad season to do that :p Who would they give the extra spot to anyway, Portugal? Scotland? :p;)

What, Essien was completely crap for a good year before his injury, he was truly awful at that point, being useless now has nothing to do with the injury.

As for lampard, Terry and Drogba being on their last legs, and talking about age, more hyperbolic rubbish. Lets see, Drogba has been FAR better than a MUCH YOUNGER Torres all season, Terry has been their best CB by a country mile, sure, made a bunch of mistakes, but nothing like the number Luiz has and Cahill hasn't looked good this season at all.

Lampard has been probably their single best and most effective player, by what measure....... other than people randomly assigning a player to the retirement pile when deemed old at some random age, are you deciding they are on their last legs?

Who has been Utd's best player in the past 2 months, Scholes, who has been one of their best players, with a load of a assists this year, Giggs, who has been epic in Spurs goal, a 40 year old keeper.

Some people have randomly just thrown out any idea of certain players being any good any more due to age, and almost every one of these assumptions has made those people look rather daft this year.

Giggs has 3 goals 11 assists this year, Lampard has 9 goals 4 assists, a manager that drops him and is clearly hoping Lampard will fail so he can get rid of him. Thats joint top scorer at the club, and Terry, is Chelsea's 4th highest scorer on top of that.

Seriously by what measure can anyone say Lampard is on his last legs, the fact that he's played a part in 38 games already this season? has 14 goals and 5 assists in all the competitions he's played in, or is this based purely on his age and nothing to do with his performances?

I don't remember SAF saying Chelsea was ageing in all the wrong places, that would be odd for a guy who just brought a 36/37year old out of retirement because his young players sucked balls, and has a 38year old playing well, and had no problems keeping VDS playing till the keeper himself wanted to retire, you can be certain that had VDS wanted to play another year, Fergie would have kept him.

Chelsea's problem isn't age, its horrific transfer market activity, and now a crap manager. Ramires was woeful last night, he is a rubbish player, Torres was a waste of 50million, Malouda shouldn't be at any prem league team, Mikel is limited, Meireles is being asked to play a role he's no good at, Luiz is a joke of a player, Kalou, etc, etc. They just have a poor squad, and like Arsenal has their best players have left over the past 4-5 years, they've replaced the vast majority of them with far inferior players.

I find this quite surprising as he doesn't strike me as a moron (not that his interviews really mean anything).

He's been a bit deluded post match in both games against us this season claiming Chelsea were the better side in both games. I dont know what to make of him tbh he's obviously a manager under pressure but in recent weeks he seems less defiant and almost resigned to his fate.

What, Essien was completely crap for a good year before his injury, he was truly awful at that point, being useless now has nothing to do with the injury..
Essien was still a useful squad player before his injury, and it is to be determined if/when he fully recovers if he still is

Not really surprising Drogba is better than Torres recently, he couldnt be much worse - doesnt stop him from having lost a lot of his quality he had 2 - 3 seasons ago (I could be wrong, but Ive got a feeeling he was out for a lot of last season)

Terry has also made aload more mistakes than he ever used to - now maybe one or two could be down to being unlucky etc, but the amount he has made is because of age /not changing his game due to his body reacting slower than it used to (also with a big op today, it could slow him up further)

Lampard has been probably their single best and most effective player, by what measure....... other than people randomly assigning a player to the retirement pile when deemed old at some random age, are you deciding they are on their last legs?

When did Giggs ever appear in goal - let alone for Spurs (and anyway keepers have to have completely different skills to outfield players , so their age isnt comparable to other 10 players, in respect to VDS or any other keeper who plays to 40). Scholes missed half the season by not playing so OF COURSE he is going to look a lot fresher its only natural - not disputing he has played well, but it helps if you compare like to like.

I dont think I ever suggested Lampard needs to retire, but he cant also control Chelsea's midfield single handed like he used to either, and get the 20 goals or so a season at the same time - he has to be rested more often to get the most from him in big games.

Just because player x can play to 38/39 or further has NO RELATION to whether another player at a different club can do the same. I never mentioned Giggs (who all the same has terrible games as well as good ones)

Its a brave manager to keep playing someone who isnt doing their primary job even if they do provide a goal or assist every other game (especially in a pretty specialised role like centre -half)

I don't remember SAF saying Chelsea was ageing in all the wrong places, that would be odd for a guy who just brought a 36/37year old out of retirement because his young players sucked balls, and has a 38year old playing well, and had no problems keeping VDS playing till the keeper himself wanted to retire, you can be certain that had VDS wanted to play another year, Fergie would have kept him..
So because you dont remember , he obviously never said it huh? sounds about right

Actually SAF said something along those lines about 2- 3 seasons ago (during the summer) and has repeated it on the by and by a few times since.

Get your facts right, Scholes asked to come back (probably 1/2 knowing Cleverley was out for a further month or two at the time, without even considering Anderson) , SAF had no role in "bringing him back" apart from saying "yes".

As above, keepers abilities at different ages are completely incomparable to outfield players

exactly what I said in different words

Hoping to see some more of cleverley and pogba tomorrow. Ajax never looked particularly dangerous but we have to be a little careful I guess.

14:13 On Paul Pogba staying: "It's possible. There's been no progress on his contract talks."

14:11 Ten minutes in, we get to the main news from the conference: Rooney will miss the game. "Rooney's out for tomorrow," Sir Alex says. "He has a bad throat. There were traces of it in Amsterdam last Thursday and he's been in bed for a lot of the weekend."

RE: Cleverly - 'Hopefully he'll play a full game tomorrow.'
--

He then apparently listed - Hernandez, Young, Nani, Smalling & Jones as 'needing games and they will play'.

Further on the Pogba thing this is what ESPN have popped up:

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/s...t-to-start,-rooney-out;-owen-back-in-training

"Rio has become an important figure at the club. He is good with the young players," Ferguson said. "At the moment, he's working hard on the boy Pogba and talking to him. The young boy is unsure, but Rio is well regarded by him."

''It is possible we could give Pogba a run-out,'' said Ferguson. ''It depends because there are a lot of players who need a game; Nani, Young, Hernandez, Cleverley, Smalling, Jones. Those players will all play tomorrow and we hope to put a sprinkling of experience amongst it.''

young egos, surrounded by people who feed the ego to get $$$

Very few young players live up to the hype, but its pushed on them by agents and hangers on, they go to far to soon and never live up to their potential/Get huge egos when loaned out and dont work hard, see Bostock at spurs.

No one should have to be working on him in the first place, he shouldn't need convincing to stay if he does then **** him off and get someone else in instead

and then you consider the cost of getting a replacement (even for a place on the verge of the 1st team) and knowing its unlikely SAF will spend that much......so its either Pogba, or continueing with what Utd already have (and use week in week out)
