UEFA Champions League/Europa League 8/9/10 April *** Spoilers ***

Gotta give utd credit, they played pretty damn well considering it was Bayern.

Agreed. When the draw was announced I never expected it to still be an open tie in the second half of the second leg. Man U have been much better in the champions league than in the premiership.

Im hoping for a Real Bayern semi and Atletico and Chelsea semi...that would be some tasty semi's there.

I think this would be the best line-up overall. Plus it also offers the chance for a repeat of the 2012 final, which would be interesting to say the least :D Mourinhio vs the best team in Europe...

It's written into Curtois's loan deal that if they are drawn together in the Semi's and he plays then Atletico must pay €3m Euros each time he plays. In other words if they are drawn together he won't play because they cannot afford 6 million euros.

Good game that was, first half i thought Utd were going to score. 2nd half was just as good till Utd conceded 20 secs later when they scored lol. Rooney was beyond terrible tonight, 3 golden chances to make it Utd's and he fluffed every single one of them :/.

Said to my mates that it would finish 3-1 to Bayern and soon as the first goal went in...you could see Bayern thought right time to kill them off and they did with 3 nice goals.

Atletico and Barca game was no surprise, didnt expect Barca to go through...ever since they lost Pep they havent been the same and probably wont be. From what i saw, Atletico were the better team tonight...Messi hardly did anything all night lol.

I'm no Rooney fan but his two clear chances to shoot I was surprised he was so so poor in front of goal.

First one after Dante or Boateng basically fell over leaving him free to either blast it or run towards goal he just stood there for a seemingly ridiculous length of time doing nothing till the defence got back. The later chance much closer to the goal which required a first time blast at goal and almost certain goal resulted in a crappy slow pass beyond the far post.

Rooney was shocking, I think the team look much more capable(yet still not much) with Rooney pushed forward. Some people insist he's great in that number 10 role. He's effective on the wing or upfront, but absolutely not in the play maker role, I think he's basically incompetent in that role. The last several games with or without him playing Utd have looked better not because RVP isn't playing, and not because Rooney was upfront(he's missed their best game) but because they put a playmaker in the playmaker/key position. Difference between Mata or Kagawa and Rooney in the number 10 role has been night and day for Utd.

Overall I think Bayern were between poor and just asleep. They didn't try really at any stage of both games till they went behind in the second leg. They totally dominated possession in a totally useless way that Guardiola teams often do. The second they went behind tonight they switched to crossing it first time, actually countering at speed, driving forwards and taking the shot when it came up. They scored straight away, honestly if they had been more direct in both legs it would have been another 7-0 across both legs with Utd demoralised and falling apart.

Guardiola having a terrible effect on the team already. Bayern last year were the most exciting team in the world to watch, this year they have been so boring so often.

Will say, phenomenal hit by Evra, just a shame he can't defend any more.

Atletico, well done, solid defensively, very very unlucky not to score at least a couple more and make it safe, hitting the crossbar a couple times. Atletico are a team that can defend brilliantly but still be a powerhouse going forwards with some fantastic attacking. Very good all around team, would be phenomenal if they could win the champs league. Simeone is doing a fantastic job. I'd prefer Simeone over Guardiola at Arsenal. Without one of the best attacks in the world I think Guardiola would create a crap defence and a meh offence. Simeone I feel could drill any defence to improve drastically and create a good counter attacking offence without relying on pure position and moments of individual brilliance so much.

I've read that this morning as well. I'd be surprised if Athletico didn't challenge UEFA on that one.

It's probably got nothing to do with UEFA more likely to be a term of the loan deal between the 2 clubs.

As the American commentary team stated, there's a difference between defending well and playing good.

We managed to defend relatively competently in the first leg but over the course of the two legs we never really outplayed our opposition.

I don't think you defended well, you defended no differently after Utd scored last night, bayern played differently. They played in a way that was easy to defend against up till they were really forced to play frankly less crap offensive football. They were incredibly slow, not forcing chances, doing the same couple of predictable things over and over. When you slow every attack by delaying the final ball or cross you let the entire defence get back, get in line turn to face away from goal and set themselves.

What they finally started to do literally the second you scored, was to attack faster, to get the cross in as the defence was moving towards the goal, they didn't give them time to get set and everyone get in position. Night and day in terms of attacking quality and entirely different prospect defensively.

Utd weren't terrible and certainly when given the chance to defend got themselves in place well, they were pretty organised, but bayern played into Utd's hands. As soon as Bayern started pushing that defence properly by not delaying every cross/pass, Utd dropped 3 goals pretty close together without an awful lot of quality from Bayern.

The real issue is at any stage in the tie it looked like Bayern could comfortably go up 3 gears, come back and win relatively easily and still not have to get near their top gear to do so. If Utd had taken a couple of their chances in the first leg, or if Rooney hadn't fluffed his first chance so badly last night, I just see Bayern stepping up earlier in the tie, nothing else.

We were never going to outplay any of the best European teams though. I have to admit that Moyes got his tactics spot on there. It was funny to watch Pep criticise us for it as well, if the shoe was on the other foot he'd have been setting up to park the bus.

I think everyone worked so hard in the 1st half that legs where like concrete after an hour or so. Given how well he did during the 1st leg maybe Utd should have got Buttner on directly after the leveller.

Rooney wasnt at his best by any means but he had to play and with his numb / injured toe his usual assurity of touch just wasnt present.

Bayern really werent brilliant, and it would be interesting to see a Bayern / Real semi because both defenses are pretty weak (even though I would have loved Dortmund to have gone through instead of them on Tuesday)

Will be cheering on Atletico from here on, they are definitely capable of beating all the remaining teams as long as they dont get any bad injuries

Why's that? Do we not have fame, fortune just as much as bayern if not more so? Either we have squandered it all to somehow be vastly inferior all over the pitch or something else

Because if we came out and tried to play toe-to-toe with them we'd have gotten a good hard pummeling? They're just... much better than United in just about every position on the pitch.

I don't like to see it but losing five or six nil to Bayern wouldn't have done anyone any good.

But that's what im saying if we too had good players would it be different.

For instance let's talk about wingers, how many times did valencia beat his man get inside the box and either cross or get a shot in?

Who's selling ronaldo to buy a player who can't do the simple tasks expected from a winger. How many times did our midfield pick the ball up and run forward into space to draw a man and make space for other players? None of them did. Not because we are playing against bayern no because they never do because they are low quality players.

Well exactly. This is what Moyes is being given £££ to try to rectify in the summer. It looks like either way he's going to be around until well into next season.

I just hope that he doesn't squander it on dross like he did last summer, but at least according to the rumour mill he's targeting the right players.

I think the biggest question is where to strengthen? I mean midfield is an absolute given but we don't want to get into a Tottenham type situation and buy too many too fast - yet we could end up needing a central defender, two wing backs, two central midfielders, and at least one (maybe two) wingers.

Funny that as chelsea were slated by opposition fans for doing the exact same thing against Bayern. When the shoe is on the other foot...

Anyway I'm not really fussed who we get in the semi final now. All three teams are better than us so I'm just going to enjoy the ride as anything can happen.

Well i'll admit I've happily slated teams that have done it against United in the past but I now understand why it happens.

I still don't like it, I like attacking football but who can honestly try that against Bayern? Real Madrid and maybe Barca could have a damn good go but anybody else would get a damn good hiding.

Oh please don't say that :(

You really thought he might be gone between now and August?

Wwll when was the last time robben knocked us out of europe? Bayern recognise if you play wingers you might as well have good ones who can use some skill and shoot a bit. Sadly our wingers who we bought to replace ronaldo are both terrible at all of those things you'd want.

Wasn't expecting Barca to go out. Is the spanish league getting a third big player now? Atletico seem to be doing well domestically too.
