UEFA Champions League/Europa League 8/9/10 March *** Spoilers ***

Lets be honest he was never close to ever being being the best player in the side, he just had longevity. Was there ever a season where he was the best United player over a season?

Phil Neville won more than Shearer, I think despite the decorations I know who I'd rather have :D;)

Apart from the fact SAF quoted to having 4 world class players in his squad during his tenure, Giggs, Cantona, Ronaldo and you guessed it Scholes.

He was 34 when he did that. By that age Slippy G and Fat Frank were already retired in the USA. Producing that in a Champions League semi final against the best team in the world. Not to mention having to come out of retirement and helping us to win the league at 38! Van Persie gets a lot of credit but people seem to forget who was the glue holding everything together.

Not a lot of players have his vision or footballing brain. A lot of "greats" have tried to evolve from an attacking midfielder into the conductor of the pitch but none have done as well in the English game as Scholes. He is up there with your Pirlo's and Xavi's without a shadow of a doubt! It is also what we have been greatly lacking since the end of the 2013 season!

That quote is a load of rubbish and you have to wonder what motivated SAF to say it because it's clearly untrue. Van Der sar, stam, evra, rio, vidic and ruud were all "world class" off the top of my head.

As for Scholes, I have never understood the spell he managed to put on people. I'm not sure when it happened (perhaps after a Zidane quote?) but I woke up one morning to discover we had been playing with an all time great in the team for years (unless it was a game where he was benched for nicky butt). A good player, sometimes very good but that's all.

He was totally justified and correct with his rant however.

If you don't rate paul Scholes, i suggest you stick to watching another sport tbh.

It's nit a sense if entitlement. Its the knowledge that we have so much money, so many fans, the infrastructure and history that for us nit to be challenging for domestic and European glory means that something has gone drastically wrong. On and off the pitch.

the board should be reviewing their own positions to allow this to continue under their tenure.

As United fans we all need to come to the realisation that there are fundamental issues at the club which need to be sorted and until they are we're going to be poop. SAF/Gill look to have run the club really well and this is just not happening now. There are clearly issues from the board level, to the manager through to the team.

I don't think it's all LVG's fault - sure, some of his tactics are bizarre but I believe the issues are much more deeper than purely him. The players are simply not as good (LVG isn't entirely to blame here) compared to those we've in the past and injuries have not helped (but hey, all teams experience this, no excuses).

We're simply not good enough... face the facts chaps. You can chuck as much money as you want at it but without sound management the club isn't going anywhere.

We're years away from becoming a consistent top team again.

Jose is probably good for the short-term but you have to wonder if there is a long-term plan at the club.

I disagree. Scholes was a fantastic player.

I don't really understand the comparison? One is a forward and the other is a midfielder come defender.

Random long shot doesn't really prove much.

Gerrard played 8 less games for Liverpool than Wotsit Willy(if you're going for dumb names, although at least accurate) did for manu and double the international games, whilst Lampard played quite a lot more games in the PL than Scholes and a similar number of international appearences.

So basically played less games his entire career, so really that point isn't all that impressive.

I would say that was more due to SAF's managerial style. People like Scholes would be rested and brought out for the big games. Rather than say Gerrard who would play nearly every one. I guess that is what helped him and other players have such a long career at the top level. Gerrard was pretty much done for in his last two seasons. (Slip, Uruguay, Red card against United just to name a few) Frank came close in my opinion with his goal scoring ability but he never had the ability of a controlling midfielder like Gerrard or Scholes.

Also I would hardly call it a random long shot. (Youtube can attest to that) Scholes would constantly bang out shots like that. His accuracy with the ball was absolutely up there with the best.

Sense of entitlement? He is the most decorated English player of all time is he not? Played in incredibly successful Manchester United teams.

He was clearly devastated by the result (and performance), and rightly so. Manchester United were dire last night, and have been for a while now.

The will to win that SAF coached into those players cannot be understated and/or undervalued.

I'd say it was more due to the fact he wasn't replied upon and played in a squad, not the best player and didn't have the team built around him to be honest.

Gerrard's second last season was fantastic, so not sure where you're imagining that.

He wasn't banging out shots like that at all either, scored once in a while by that stage, that shot is not very representative of how good he was at that age. (No single shot is lol)

Exactly, in his last 8 years the number of goals he scored...

I guess he didn't hit the ball that often if he was 'that' accurate :D

Even in his prime he wasn't that prolific. Very good player, but massively over rated. I don't think I ever thought he was in the top 3 at united for most seasons let alone a great.

That's because he wasn't a prolific goalscorer as he wasn't that type of midfielder (maybe in his career pre 2004). Look at your Xavi's and Pirlo's. None of them scored a lot of goals but were essential to their teams because they controlled the game and made the space and opportunities for the other players.
