They scored more (and therefore it's implied played more attacking football) in a hostile environment than their opponents did. We've had the away rules goal rubbish before, it's not a perfect science but it's a means to an end.

The fairest way to decide a tie is to not have the away goals rule, the away goals rule stops the away from being ultra defensive thats the reason it exists.
