What I don't understand is why England willingly take the game to penalties.
We all knew that they were going to lose, if it went to penalties, so they should've tried to win the game in normal time. Do or die.

What's more amazing is that the commentary team were talking their chances up just before the penalty shoot-out. From what I understand, we have the 2nd worst penalty record among the top teams (I think Holland are worst), so we need to avoid going to penalties.

In fairness, justice was served, because we are not in the top 4 of European teams.
England can't really complain.

Can't knock anyone for missing a penalty regardless of whether they slip and miss, hit the woodwork or collapse in tears before taking it. Most people would bottle it if they were asked to take one.
