People really love to get on Sterling's case after his cost, he had multiple great performances this year. City themselves had loads of dire performances in which Sterling also sucked, but he was great in several of their big euro games and he was very good in multiple games for England.
He might be out of form, not near his best and he may have had a terrible game the other day but that doesn't automatically mean he'll play badly today.
The issue though is Rooney, he slows down the team, we took ages to get forward, he was extremely unwilling to play balls down the middle of the pitch and spent most of the game passing slowly from one wing to the other, which due to the lack of speed it was done with and usually after the whole opposition was back made no difference. Switching wings didn't create an attack on the other wing, we just got stuck on the other wing. You need a creative passer making lots of defence/midfield splitting passes. Anyone can pass sideways slowly, anyone can knock it 50 yards. We need faster decisions, faster passing and more runs in to support the attack.
Any footage of trouble with English fans seen in the past week, a huge portion of those fans have shirts with Rooney on the back... that is why he's playing.
