UEFA EURO 2016 Qualifiers ** spoilers ** [3rd - 8th September 2015]

Scoring a penalty that was the result of a dive :D. What a way to beat the record, still any goal is a goal.

Exactly. In years to come the finer details will matter not, this thread shows just that. Everyone will just look at number of goals scored and see Rooney up there with Bobby.

Give over the butt hurt.

Well done Rooney, you can only score against what's in front of you.

Now please stop being **** in general. :(

Those aren't the only teams that were put in front of him though, he was great when he was younger but he peaked early and rode his fame for the rest.

In respect to the other comment about jealousy, it's not about hating rival club players he just hasn't been deserving of a place in the team for years.

How they talk about him playing for another four or five years, or him dropping back to midfield for England is very disheartening.

He's had a fantastic career but it's been on a down would spiral for years. I just think no one has the balls to tell him he's not as good any more.

I think what makes Bobby Charlton's record even more impressive was that he was a midfield player, to score that many goals for your country from midfield is incredible. As for England's best out and out striker of all time, that would have to be Jimmy Greaves.

However, regardless of peoples' opinions of Rooney, you can't take anything away from his achievement; of all the great strikers that have come and gone in the last 45 years, only Lineker got anywhere near 50 and Owen to a lesser extent (not counting Greaves as he retired before Charlton). He deserves all the credit he gets, incredible feat and it wouldn't surprise me if Rooney's record stood for another 45.

TBH haters are gonna hate.

I think it's a bit a silly to say that Rooney isn't an England great; you don't get to be all time highest scorer without being a great player. But greatest ever? Or even top three? I don't think so. That's not to take anything away from what he has achieved just to recognise that others have also achieved great things.

50 goals in an era where the players clearly don't give a ***** anymore about international football other than how much it makes them worth and commercial rights is a better achievement to me.

Look at the BBC report on how many strike partners he has had and how many different players over the years in the starting 11. Now we have CL football which is a much higher standard than the dross churned out at international level.

It's not his fault he's having to live through an era with the two best players ever to play. Yes he peaked early, I personally don't believe he's better than the player that left Everton but it's still a great achievement considering the dross around him the last 10 years.
