UEFA EURO 2016 Qualifiers ** spoilers ** [3rd - 8th September 2015]

Shearer, Owen and Lineker as three off the top of my head, I'd rate them all as better than Rooney even if they didn't net hatfuls against Macedonia and Estonia.

Have you checked their major tournament goal tallies?

Only Lineker has a higher goals to game ratio with 48 in 80. "Only" 6 of them came in major tournaments. 26 of them in friendlies.

Croatia and Switzerland are in the top 20... France aren't so... Ok

I'm sure France have been a Top 20 ranked team at some point since 2003 when Rooney started playing but he never scored against them anyway, not sure if we even played them in competitive games, just illustrating the point.

Read through the list of who he has scored against competitively and Croatia and Switzerland is about as good as it gets, whether they were Top 20 ranked at the time I don't know and I'm not going to check whilst posting on my phone but if they weren't that only reinforces the point about low calibre of teams he scores against.

Charlton and co might not have played against the minnows but the general level of opposition was poorer when he played.

Rooney is getting a hard time now because he isn't the player he was 3-4 years ago. In his prime he was a beast.

Only 6 of them? Pretty sure he got 6 in a single World Cup, winning the Golden Boot, along with more in a later World Cup and whatever he got in Euro Tournaments.

Yep, sorry you are right. I counted the games rather than goals.

It would be 10 in total.

He definitely scored more than 6, as you say he scored 6 in 86. Then a few at 90.

Don't think he scored many at the Euros, we got dicked in 88 and I don't think he played in 92.

Linekar is an absolute legend, sniffer extraordinaire.

I think people still consider us one of the elite International teams and many of the oppositions Rooney has scored against are on par with us!
Rooney has done well to score the amount he has with the quality in the team and is one of our best strikers we've had.

The thing with Rooney is, he's scored 2 tournament goals since 2004 and taken part in 4 tournaments since then, though injured for the most part in 2006. That really isn't good enough to consider him one of the greats.

Taken from englandstats.com...

Bobby Charlton 49 goals in 9435mins.
Wayne Rooney 50 goals in 8085mins.
Gary Lineker 48 goals in 6529mins.
Peter Crouch 22 goals in 2198mins.

Going purely by those stats compared to Charlton Rooney's record looks good but for me Lineker and Crouch have much better goal scoring records, they just didn't play for as long.

That's not getting into the quality of opposition which it's fair to say most of Rooney's goals have come against much lower ranked teams in friendlies/qualifying, which there are far more of today than in Bobby Charlton's time (and probably even Lineker's with friendlies).

Nothing can beat David Nugent, 1 game, 1 goal.

A scintillating one inch strike it was too, and not remotely stolen off Defoe.

14 of charltons goals came in home nation games and the gap was bigger then that now. 22 of his goals came in friendlies. He also played in the best England side quality wise compared to the rest of the world.

The gap between the sides is closer now than in charltons time to the poorer sides.

Everyone trying to put lipstick on Shrek, at the end of the day he's still bad and it took him this long and some dubious penalties to outscore a midfielder. Everyone saying "Yeah but in his prime / in his form Rooney can compete" is just kidding themselves. He hasn't been in any shape of form for a long time. He's just one of those players that were signed for their potential to never quite reach it.

What crap. Rooney has very much earned his signing fee for Man Utd.

233 goals. 170 in the PL and 36 in Europe. 2 seasons where he has scored 34 goals, helping to carry Man Utd even after the loss of Ronaldo.

5x Premier League and 1x CL winner. All times where his goals have been important.

He isn't Messi or Ronaldo, but he has arguably done more than players like even Henry whilst in tbe English game.

I think he'll retire feeling pretty good. He has lived up to any reasonable expectations. Not all players can be the top 1 or 2 players of their time.
