For once I agree with you. We make products for commercial application for England. He looked promising, once, got the big move so Utd pushed him as the head of the team, they put his face on games and kids buy his shirt. At some point Rooney the commercial product and his value FAR surpassed his value as a footballer. Even as his football gets worse and worse years of investment in his commercial value means he's still got his face on products, still on adverts for things linked to Utd and needs to be played for that rather than his footballing ability.
At his best, he was a pretty limited but effective striker, he was never technically gifted, always a dodgy passer. he had power, drive and a decent shot that was about it. He lost his drive 3-4 years ago, his effectiveness has dropped off a cliff.
If he'd been the same player who never left Everton or moved to Spurs for 10mil he'd never have become the product to be pushed by a top team, then wouldn't of happened for England and he'd have been benched a long time ago for England.
As you say media has pretended he's one of the worlds best for years. At one time he looked like he MIGHT become one of the best strikers, at some point in the media this just became IS one of the worlds best strikers but he never actually got there and for 4 years he hasn't looked capable of getting anywhere near worlds best strikers.
