UEFA Euro 2020 Round of 16 ** spoilers ** [26th - 29th June 2021]

Impeccable interview by Southgate
Yep, very well handled. He speaks well, and he's got the best results of any recent England manager.

Most importantly, the players are all clearly 100% behind him - which i think is most important.

It's just a shame he's so defensive and his team are hard to watch, at times.

However, you can't argue with most of his recent results, bar Scotland.

is this your first England game?
Not at all. I'm just not getting all giddy about winning this. Yes we have won and the players should be congratulated for the performance but the realist in me saw the poor show from Germany and the the fact we had a huge boost from being at home and 90% of the crowd being English in our Wembley stadium. Yes I get the irony of your post but you have to agree, it was a pretty sure thing.

Really thought we'd miss Mings at the back but we dealt with them very well. We never really stopped taking the sting out of the game. Maguire I thought was excellent.

I know people will slaughter me for saying this, but I'd rather the team that wins the tournament be the team playing attractive, attacking football and not a defensive style.

If England win it by playing defensive it will just herald more defensive play in future. It's already being celebrated on the BBC by the pundits as "the English way". Nah, sod that.

Nobody celebrates Greece for winning it in that style in 2004. They remember it, but they don't celebrate it.

Defence did have me worried at times, given the German's managed to play a number of through balls with no real trouble despite us having such a defensive set up, that's my only criticism really. I'm glad Maguire had a decent game, I really don't rate him highly but he did well today and shut me up.

TBH, Southgate, for all the critics .. we haven't conceded and we have just beat Germany, so i'll eat humble pie for criticising recently for being too defensive and that interview at the end, very nice comment regarding 96...

I'm quite happy to win even if it's by us only winning the remaining games 1-0 to be honest, attractive football although more fun to watch, doesn't always get results (aka Brighton).

Greece 2004 is easily the most memorable Euros win of my lifetime. The underdog taking it to the big players and winning, I loved it.

Oh yeah definitely a few sketchy moments, but I think weighed overall we suppressed so well. We took them off the ball so cleanly.

I was at Wembley. I scrutinised the whole team up and down. We played backwards constantly and it was a bit frustrating.

But

Did Germany look like getting past our defenders, not chance. Did rice and Philips make it boring, yes, did they stop us from ever looking like conceding, yes...

So

Not sure what to say, this strategy could work the whole way.. Take your chances, and hope that defending the crap out of the game and waiting on a random chance is the way forward...

I look forward to watching it on TV to see the difference
