Terrible decision to award the penalty and even worse decision to let it stand, however the one on Kane where he got his toe to the ball and then the Danish player kicked him was a penalty but wasn't given and also not over-ruled despite being clear and obvious made it even itself in the same game, that said I'm not happy winning by cheating and didn't feel like celebrating. Was watching the game with my neighbour and he agrees with the fact it wasn't a penalty but just keeps saying "We won so all's good" but I cannot drop the fact that I hate diving and conning the ref and it feels a shallow victory to me.
We we're all over them after halftime but the decision to remove Grealish after we took the lead and had a chance to counter attack was baffling as we had a few chances to counter but didn't have the support so could really have run away with it.
Pickford has been quite good all tournament so far but he was 100% at fault for the goal and his distribution was very suspect last night, we won't get away with those against the Italians, I would also say we've got this far in spite of Southgate still, strange team selections and waiting until he 'has' to make subs rather than trying to dictate the game with the subs.
I also feel that Wembley is not a benefit to this England team (or many in the past), look at the way they played in Rome and then look at last night, the 1st half was like they were petrified and were being crushed by the weight of expectation.

When I was first looking at the slow mo replays, I was looking for contact on Sterling’s foot, but as people have said it’s actually higher up his leg and below the knee. It looks like a complete dive if you focus only on the foot but there is definitely some contact going on (penalty or not).

Thats a dive

That's getting overruled, dive.

Oh this will get overturned.

how is that getting past VAR, please please please

lmao Sterling diving now, we're so embarrassing

Just as a reminder to those that think we only point out other team's diving/cheating :)

Although if Sterling dived again in the final to win it, I'd suspect those of us disappointed by that would be outnumbered by those just happy to win the tournament.

Personally I'd be disappointed if we had to cheat to win.

I agree that the way we won kind of takes away a bit of the excitement. An OG and a soft penalty. Its very hard to say if the Sterling one was a penalty as there is contact but its so hard to tell (impossible really) how much it knocked Sterling off balance. When you are jinking through players like that, it doesn't take much to throw you off. I also thought the Kane one looked like the defender got the ball before he contacted Kane so again, no penalty.

Its because Southgate is a coward and despite dominating them when Grealish came on, as soon as we were ahead he reverting to form and went back to being uber defensive. That simply won't work against Italy and its not how I would want to win a tournament either way. We have such a wealth of attacking talent and our manager has us playing like a team that is lucky to be at the Euros. I thought Denmark played some really nice 1-2s in the first half and could have got at us a bit more if not for our solid defending. We literally had 0 reason to play 2 DMs and it cost us so much in the first half when our DMs were trying to get forward to help the attack and were then not present to clean up like DMs should. Neither Philips or Rice are good playmakers which is what we needed.

He was awful last night.

Hes a crap manager. How he watches us play and still picks the same team and setup every game is beyond me. As soon as Grealish came on, the team suddenly changed. I didn't think Grealish put in his best performance but he lifts the team and suddenly there is a lot more space and the shape of the team was better. Taking him off again unless he was injured was bizarre. Make no mistake, this is a very good set of players and the bench options are ridiculous and yet he still doesn't use the bench well.

I also feel that Wembley is not a benefit to this England team (or many in the past), look at the way they played in Rome and then look at last night, the 1st half was like they were petrified and were being crushed by the weight of expectation.

I don't think its been detrimental, I just think that Southgates "style" of football doesn't lead to exciting football and the crowd feeds off excitement. Its always a bit nervous unless we get a result like Ukraine.

It was soft but far from one of the worst decisions we've seen over the years. You can rake through loads of past tournaments and find dodgy decisions that have gone the finalists way, perhaps not as game-changing if there's more than a goal in it.

We were the victims of the worst cheating incident in football so we're due a bit of fortune.

Never in a month of Sundays is that a penalty, but I'm not too bothered tbh. You can see why he's given it but I don't think there's enough in there to seriously claim it's a foul.

If you force a team back in their area constantly and run at them for long periods of the game, defenders are going to have to make more and more tackles and that gives referees decisions to make. If the ref hadn't have given it, VAR wouldn't have got involved.

It was the least we deserved after taking the game to the Danes following their good spell in the first half, and we were a level above them.

I'm slightly concerned that Southgate went so defensive in the second half of ET, as it's been shown that attacking rather than protecting a lead produces more wins, and I'd hate to see us do the same against Italy.

Thought Sterling, Shaw, Rice and Maguire had standout games last night. Kane's pass for the goal was unreal, and the free kick Damsgaard scored was a proper hit - he put so much power into that. Looks like England needed two Brentford players on the pitch to get through to a tournament final!

Looking forward to Sunday!

It was a soft penalty, that doesn't make it a dive. He'd tied up 2 defenders and they both touch him while he was moving at speed, that can throw you off balance. You are meant to go down. If there was no contact at all, VAR would overturn it. This is just something that happens in football almost weekly.

We dominated the vast majority of the match and easily deserved to win on balance. When you do that, things tend to go your way. To a man, our team played brilliantly.

There's always going to be bitter people though, not a surprise :p

People saying you don't want to cheat to win, maybe find a new sport to watch as football is basically cheating for 90mins, diving is rife (England players are certainly not alone, infact I can't think of a team that doesn't dive), simulation/full on Oscar nominated acting, shirt pulling, stealing 10 yards for throw ins, claiming a corner when you know full well you kick it out for a goal kick.

As an England fan I'm glad we won, I would rather not have divers in the team, but we are not good enough to compete unless we play to the same 'rules' othersplay to, you can guarantee the Italians will be rolling around the floor on Sunday trying to win free kicks and penalties all night

Agree, I think we have had zero reason to play two DM's the whole tournament. Especially against Scotland. It's held us back, they have held us back with the sideways and backwards passing. Even when we get into good positions to penetrate they work it backwards again. Incredibly low risk football. Well until they backpass for Pickford to thump it.

we won't get away with those against the Italians

We always over hype other teams while picking ours to bits. The Italians have looked more suspect at times and in danger of going out than we have. I'm honestly expecting a controlled comfortable win.
