It falls under simulation for me, at the most he felt a brush against his leg and then flopped over. You actually see more contact toward strikers every single corner/free-kick and nothing is ever given.

Its not the same thing. Stand still and get someone to try and push you over or knock you off balance and see how hard it is. Now run full pace and try and try to dodge some moving objects and see how easy it is to be knocked off balance or generally be impeded.

I used to get knocked off the ball all the time when I was playing hockey because refs let them get away with it. I would beat 2 guys but each one would knock me off balance and by the time you get to the third one you barely have control of the ball and he cleans up with ease. As someone said above, you get no reward for staying on your feet so we can't be surprised when players go down easily. This isn't sunday league where big 20 stone lumps kick the crap out of each other and a bodycheck is a legitimate defensive move. They are sprinting in tight spaces where any contact can knock you off balance and lose you control.

I'm not a fan of diving but until refs reward players for staying on their feet it will continue. What I really hate is pretending you are horribly injured when you go down.

then look at this angle too - contact from both, first bit to the side of his leg from a knee at 2 seconds in.

And this guy's uploaded two photos:

Exactly

Quite clear contact from both players. He basically gets Squashed. I would like to see anyone else here stay upright, running at that speed with those two bits of contact.

It's a clear penalty, and the VAR angle they showed later in the match quite clearly shows this. To say otherwise is just rejecting the reality of what the footage shows.

Personally the furore around this is a bit weird. I've seen far softer penalties given without as much fuss. The Denmark players knocked sterling over without playing the ball, in the penalty area. It was a penalty.

All of that goes out the window as we're the most hated team in the world apparently. If Sterling had gone through and scored instead, the discussion would move to the 2nd ball on the pitch.

I thought it was an interesting game.

Usually physicality is a big part of how England play and that was hindered by the fact Denmark are a very tall side.

They were very organised for most of the game and England struggled to play through them as expected. That being said England still seemed to create the majority of the chances even when Denmark were playing well. Pickford looked like he lost his nerve for a while and I’m praying that’s just a blip in his otherwise brilliant composure this tournament. The free kick was a worldy and we did well to come back so quickly from going behind. It was nice to see that England didn’t completely lose themselves after conceding.

After about an hour the Danes looked leggy and we were pinning them back in their own half. Before the full time whistle blew we were peppering their goal and it looked like only a matter of time. This was true even in extra time right up until the penalty was given.

About the penalty…. It was soft. At full speed it looks like Sterling legitimately went down because two players twice his size got in his way. The angle shown to us in the game is the biggest cause of controversy… it makes it look as if there was no contact at all. There was.

Sterling might have been able to stay on his feet and whether you agree with it or not, this is part of the game. Going down if you feel contact in the box. It’s something the opposition would try to do to us if they had the chance and anyone who says differently is naive.

I do think it was soft and I’m surprised it was given. That being said, it’s a shame so many people let it shadow a dominant England performance. Before the penalty it looked like we deserved a goal and it would have been a real shame for it to go to penalties.

I feel like we deserved to win, there were a few questionable moments. This includes instances where I do think we should have been awarded a penalty and cards should have been shown. Very strange decisions from the referee throughout.

We are in a final and we deserve to be there. It’s a shame so many people are going to disagree.

The main problem is the footage they initially showed as from that angle you couldn't really tell if there was contact. Even i was skeptical at first. However the later VAR angle (the one that the VAR decision makers presumably used) quite obviously shows contact, so that's why the decision was upheld.

There were far more spurious decisions by the ref. Maguire's yellow or the immunity he gave Poulsen for repeated cynical fouls.

I think the Danes completely wore themselves out from their persistent pressing. For the first two thirds of the game they were very successful at getting at our players and forcing us back to Pickford all the time . Unfortunately for them, I think that took almost all their stamina so they had almost nothing left for extra time.

I think their substitutes hindered their performance too. They were fresh but lacked the quality of the starting 11 which meant England could control the game more.

I think Southgate was spot on with the subs. Only thing I questioned was bringing on Grealish for Saka. Saka was playing brilliantly and for me, Grealish’s ability to win free kicks wasn’t as valuable against such a tall opposition. I didn’t ever feel like we’d get anything from aerial attack.

I think a few on here won't even be able to watch the final, they are only interested in a win and watching England play is torture for them unless we go a few goals up early on. The fact people think we should be able to cruise through games at this level (regardless of the squad) shows how little football they watch. The Danish are well drilled and their press is very effective but they ran out of steam in the second half, the Damsgaard sub was the nail in the coffin for them.

There are sides better than ours who've won tournaments over the years without looking that convincing. The occasion got the better of some of the lads early in the game last night but we pretty much controlled it after that.

I agree with this. Denmark are a massively underrated side, they had everything it takes to go the distance. They were really difficult to beat and this also might cause some arguments but I genuinely believe we are more suited to play against Italy than Denmark.

Don’t get me wrong, Italy are going to be tough to beat if we even manage to beat them. I just think we will be able to play our style of football better against them. They won’t press as well as the Danes and are not as much of a physical presence. Their dangers come from fast build up and precision which is a whole new challenge, especially for our defence.

Gonna be a great game on Sunday!

Good point. Maybe it's the slow mo replays that do it, but people seem very prone to over-estimating how easy it is to stay on your feet in these situations. I've never been remotely good at football, but I used to play with a bunch of guys from work every week and more than once I've been caught by a stray foot when running at full tilt. I'm sure a professional has better balance than me, but when you're already stretched it's doesn't take a lot of contact to knock you off your feet.

I didn't think it was a pen but then I also didn't think the free kick that lead to the Danish goal was a foul either so it evened itself out on the night.
fair point, but as someone points out below, not exactly equivalent. But was it a soft free kick award? Heck yes. Cracking goal though. Possibly goal of the tournie so far.
Exactly this. We were very lucky to get the pen, but that's just part of the game.
Best team won in the end, regardless of that pen decision.
the best team did win, but the ends doesn't justify the means, if we were so much better why couldn't we score from our dominance?
Those minimal touch penalties have been given all season long, the argument has always been “contact”. There was contact twice, you could see it in the replays and the stills show it.
Was it enough to throw himself on the ground? No, but that’s the state of the game these days.
Sadly yes, it would seem so.
Terrible decision to award the penalty and even worse decision to let it stand, however the one on Kane where he got his toe to the ball and then the Danish player kicked him was a penalty but wasn't given and also not over-ruled despite being clear and obvious made it even itself in the same game, that said I'm not happy winning by cheating and didn't feel like celebrating. Was watching the game with my neighbour and he agrees with the fact it wasn't a penalty but just keeps saying "We won so all's good" but I cannot drop the fact that I hate diving and conning the ref and it feels a shallow victory to me.
We we're all over them after halftime but the decision to remove Grealish after we took the lead and had a chance to counter attack was baffling as we had a few chances to counter but didn't have the support so could really have run away with it.
Pickford has been quite good all tournament so far but he was 100% at fault for the goal and his distribution was very suspect last night, we won't get away with those against the Italians, I would also say we've got this far in spite of Southgate still, strange team selections and waiting until he 'has' to make subs rather than trying to dictate the game with the subs.
I also feel that Wembley is not a benefit to this England team (or many in the past), look at the way they played in Rome and then look at last night, the 1st half was like they were petrified and were being crushed by the weight of expectation.
Well said, agree with all of that tbh. I'm happy we're in the final but not thrilled it took such a dubious call to make it happen. Southgate shuold have kept up the attack. It broke Ukraine when we did that, they had no answer. The Danes were looking the same. Instead we invite them to attack, that will not work against Italy for very long I don't think.

Although if Sterling dived again in the final to win it, I'd suspect those of us disappointed by that would be outnumbered by those just happy to win the tournament.
Personally I'd be disappointed if we had to cheat to win.
I always hate people diving. I find it much more interesting when they stay on their feet, and sometimes interesting goals come as a result.

I agree that the way we won kind of takes away a bit of the excitement. An OG and a soft penalty. Its very hard to say if the Sterling one was a penalty as there is contact but its so hard to tell (impossible really) how much it knocked Sterling off balance. When you are jinking through players like that, it doesn't take much to throw you off. I also thought the Kane one looked like the defender got the ball before he contacted Kane so again, no penalty.

Its because Southgate is a coward and despite dominating them when Grealish came on, as soon as we were ahead he reverting to form and went back to being uber defensive. That simply won't work against Italy and its not how I would want to win a tournament either way. We have such a wealth of attacking talent and our manager has us playing like a team that is lucky to be at the Euros. I thought Denmark played some really nice 1-2s in the first half and could have got at us a bit more if not for our solid defending. We literally had 0 reason to play 2 DMs and it cost us so much in the first half when our DMs were trying to get forward to help the attack and were then not present to clean up like DMs should. Neither Philips or Rice are good playmakers which is what we needed.

He was awful last night.

Hes a crap manager. How he watches us play and still picks the same team and setup every game is beyond me. As soon as Grealish came on, the team suddenly changed. I didn't think Grealish put in his best performance but he lifts the team and suddenly there is a lot more space and the shape of the team was better. Taking him off again unless he was injured was bizarre. Make no mistake, this is a very good set of players and the bench options are ridiculous and yet he still doesn't use the bench well.

I don't think its been detrimental, I just think that Southgates "style" of football doesn't lead to exciting football and the crowd feeds off excitement. Its always a bit nervous unless we get a result like Ukraine.
I'd agree with most of that. Subbing Grealish off was the most bizarre call. Every time we ran forward they were in disarray. We showed against Ukraine how the late pressure and constant attack brings results, I really don't know why he gambled on defending deep. It paid off, but inspite of the tactic not because of it. Problem is he'll now feel justified to try it in the final and against Italy? Well I don't think his luck will hold twice.

It falls under simulation for me, at the most he felt a brush against his leg and then flopped over. You actually see more contact toward strikers every single corner/free-kick and nothing is ever given.

He pretty much admitted it in the post match interview too. "I felt contact so...[i went down]" Is that really what the modern game wants to be? With VAR they should be doing post-match hammering of all the play acting and soft "going down" (not that kind). It would soon stop it. It would then get to a point where it's easier to believe the genuine cases as people would not voluntarily want to be getting the inquiry and fines that follow if it doesn't go their way.

If England cheated for a penalty, Denmark cheated for a free kick.
I think the Danish free kick was incredibly soft too, but I wouldn't say they cheated. There was some holding and pushing on both sides and it didn't merit awarding a 2nd free kick IMO.

Brace yourself for the Italian Dramatic Society then!

I think it was a penelty.

The defender put his leg out and Sterling went down.

I think the camera angle that most of the papers are showing isnt the best though as we're looking behind the defender. There is another camera angle looking from the other side of the field that better shows it.

Agree with all of that .... how deep Shaw and Walker play on sunday will play a big part, they give us so many options. Mancini's boys haven't been beaten in almost 3 years!! All these runs come to an end :)

UEFA have charged England on 3 counts.

The timing of it

Booing the National Anthem
Laser pen
Fireworks

First one is a joke, as how come no other country has been charged before.
The booing is a disgrace, and a charge is quite warranted. Also the laser pen.

Don't care if anyone else does it - it's a disgrace.
