What he also needs to do is try and pick the best team, not the best 11 players.
Wouldn't take much tweaking.

E: I think everybody knows the basic starting point. Drop TAA from midfield (not fair on him or the team) unless he's in defence.
Get Bellingham to bolt up and about in MF with Rice.
Foden as a proper 10.
Gordon bomb up and down the left.

The entire internet and the whole of the footballing world seems to know this.

Its unbeleiveable that seemingly we have turned up at a major tournament with - a team that doesnt understand what they are supposed to be doing, various players out of position, "experimenting" with a player in a pivotal position and at least 1 player in the squad - again in a key position, who has zero chance of being match fit.
Tbf Southgate has been winging it in tournaments for years now but up till now has got away with it due to favourable draws, every time England has faced a good team though we’ve gone out.

Every time I watch England play of recent times they just seem dead in the last third of the park. No creativity, flare or desire to win. They seem to run out of ideas after the midfield. Come on England you know you can play better than this.

Its because we are slow and Southgate puts so much focus on defending that unless we are on top of the opposition we are breaking with minimal support. If we are on top then we are playing walking football against well organised teams who have had a year to get into their defensive shape.

The amount of movement in the final third from England vs the likes of Germany is stark.

It's to easy for the opposition to play against us because we are so one dimensional. We don't seem to mix it up whatsoever. To slow in the build up with no creativity up front or in midfield. We get to the final third and we have no movement or runners behind the defence. Even the so called lesser teams are giving us a hard time. Good teams take us apart with ease.

Dare I say it, possibly drop Kane for Watkins at least for the first half. Or at least have our attacking midfielders much closer to him. He's having to drop way to deep to get the ball at present. With the next game, I would say we have a good opportunity to mix things up a bit, or experiment as Gareth puts it.

There's no way in hell is Southgate going to drop Kane. I bet my house on it.

I agree.

You don’t come to the tournament and experiment. You find out if the player(s) can play the positions prior to the tournament matches.

Southgate doesn’t look like a man with Plan B. I am not even sure if he has a Plan A from the performances of the team in the two games gone.

There are talks that England been playing so bad that maybe they are sand bagging it to get to a more favourable draw in the knock out stages - that’s just wishful stuff

Well I called it on Thursday night that the only change would Gallagher for Trent, what’s the bet the average positions are close to this come the end of the game

Its pretty much irrelevant what players are picked when the team are playing how their manager wants. Take foden for example, his g/a is the nearly identical when playing for man city whether he is a '10' or if he is the wide forward. What he does have is an overlapping fullback, something he doesn't have when playing for England as trippier wants to come inside aswell. Same issue with midfield, slapping TAA in there as a 'quarterback' is retarded when pickford/the cb's just play hoof ball and bypass the midfield (I believe pickford has played more long balls than anyone else in the tournament for example).

He'll probably drop both Foden and TAA for Slovenia, they'll get a comfortable win against **** poor opposition and then it'll be the same lineup next game and they'll struggle as per normal.

Strong rumours Trent is out and Gallagher is in tomorrow. Other than run around a lot Gallagher doesn't really seem to contribute much so why is he starting over Mainoo? Considering our opposition do we even need a second DM though?

Dear god no real tactical change then.

Rice and Bellingham with the legs to bomb back and fourth and Foden as a 10. Gordon/Palmer on the left, he did take them for a reason!

That'd be a start and more pacey with England's player of the year in his best position with Spain's player of the year behind and bombing about.

What is so difficult about that?!??!?

E: Unless he's being a genius and saving that for the knockout stages....

Just accept we are going out in the R16 or at best make it to the quarters.

Madness taking just 1 LB too. Surely there is some English left back he could have taken who isn't injured!?

Yup Mitchell as palace was worth a shout, esp with guehi in the lineup

I've been a big fan of trippier but he's past it and offers nothing at LB
