I don't actually dislike Southgate I think he has been good for English Football he has brought stability and success to the team which was a breath of fresh air following the proceeding nightmare with the end of Hodgsons time and the Allardyce debacle. I think he has gone a tournament too far and he and the team have lost their way, he's had a really long run as England Manager and I think after Qatar on reflection it was time for a change.

To sensible for me :) but about right. Still all will be forgiven if he pulls it out the bag and we win it.

Interesting stat I found that England have played a top 10 world team 24 times under safegate, he has won 4.

If he wins it I think his job is safe for another cycle!

Results against top 10 teams are always hard to come by the game is tough at that level and the margins very small and some of those games have been very close.

Not when it matters, I.e competition and take away the penno`s (he might have won them by diving like a fairy to be fair) :)
The old penalties and friendlies don't count bogus story, it's ok you don't like Harry Kane I can understand that but to say he is one of the worst strikers ever to pull on an England shirt is just hilarious you are putting one of the best goal scorers in world football in the same bracket as ...... Michael Ricketts.

Unreal, Southgate really is a joke of a manager

Go and re watch the Croatia and Italy games.
That doesn’t answer the question, I’m fully aware of what happened in those games but do you really think that Southgate told the team to drop deep and defend the lead last night? There is definitely a problem when England go a goal up and it might well be down to coaching but it isn’t a pre ordained tactic

I know that looks terrible but do you really believe that Southgate’s standing instruction when ever we take the lead is to form a line across our own box and play like a bunch of strangers?
I’m 100% certain that safegate’s instructions are, if/when we take the lead, to drop back and make ourselves compact to protect the lead.

He's not a very good coach if the team isn't doing what he wants them to do

in terms of team selection the one I really don’t understand is Trent playing the Kalvin Philips role all the others are justifiable but playing a right back/winger as a holding midfielder makes no sense what so ever I’d much rather see Gallagher or Mainoo start round pegs in round holes and all that. Beyond that the performance makes no sense I don’t for a minute think the coaching staff send the players out with instructions for the whole team to play so deep we get over run and to pass the ball around like they’ve never met each other before yet that is what they have done both games so far.
I think TAA is being made into the scapegoat when the reality is after he was subbed off England were just as bad if not worse.

He is an easy target as he is playing out of position and playing poorly if you have a square peg in a round hole they stand out. I don’t think anyone is saying he is the main reason for England being bad these past two games but it is clearly an experiment that doesn’t work and contributes to the poor performances. If TAA was good enough to play that position for England he would be playing there at club level.

The problem for me is that he can’t drop Foden because he’s the golden boy whose won 6 PL titles and just off the back of being POTY. It’s like the Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard saga all over, you have to drop one or two of them and get a better cohesion even if the individuals aren’t as good the collective will be better.

Even former pros are saying you’ve got to find a way to fit him in. To me you’ve just got to bite the bullet and drop him as difficult as it is, if it does improve the over all team performance that’ll be enough. If it doesn’t you’ve just got to suck it up and unfortunately you’ll get dogs abuse for it.

Add to that it’s a bit of a arg moment as you’re going to have to do it in a key game. The last few games, even pre tournament were the ones to try these types of things when it’s not been working. Not coming out with nonsense like we don’t have Phillips like he got injured in the first game, he was never going to be playing.

The TAA experiment just hasn’t worked either, as great a player as he is going forward his inability to defend means he’s got to go as well.

These are professional players - that are good enough to cope with playing slightly out of position.

If the manager has a strategy - and he tells a player such as Foden that he wants him to stay out wide a bit more, and to cut in a bit less - I believe Foden is good enough to be able to play in that way... as is the rest of the squad.

I have a feeling that the England managerial problem is that our managers are not prepared to tell their star players "you are not doing what I asked. If you don't do it, you won't play".
This is the Southgate problem, the Erickson problem with Lamps/Gerard.

Instead of having strong leadership from the manager, and the captain - England seem to have this idea of having a "group of players" as leaders.

This me mentality needs to change. Players need to be told what's expected of them.
It's still perfectly fine to deviate from that plan occasionally on pitch - that's how you outwit the opposition.
