UEFA Euro 2024 Quarter Finals ** spoilers ** [5th - 6th July 2024]

Kane was even worse than normal last night. Contributed absolutely nothing apart from dropping far too deep. I think just changing him for either Tony or Watkins would make a massive difference to how we play.

England have technically been on the easier side of the draw (yes I know its not easy in the sense that all the teams are there for a reason and you can only beat wha ts put in front of you). However alkl England have done is basically park the bus, Pickford is probably the player with the highest number of touches for games considering that they managed to work it all the way back to him from a corner on multiple occasions over multiple games.

Playing that kind of negative football against a team that can properly open you up like a tin of baked beans will end up in tears and the only reason it hasn't happened so far is becuase England got lucky in the draw. No doubt you will beat Holland, probably on pens after another boring 1-1 or no score draw and you will probably end up wining if you play France again by the same route. I guess a win is a win at the end of the day......................

So you're not English and posting that England are, essentially, terrible but lucky - how original.

Thanks for the psychic predictions of the next match too btw - you're really intelligent

Here's my inerpretation of your rant - Jealousy.

Here's the thing - England, for the SECOND European championships in a row are at least in the Semi.

The football has not been impressive but neither has the football of ANY team - and please don't waffle on that Spain are playing amazingly...they are not.

In both European Championships we have had the most easiest ways to the final. If we were in the other side of the draw this tournament we would have gone home long ago.

This isn't Euro 96 when we played Holland, Spain and Germany all in a row.

You can only beat what’s put in front of you! France have been nearly as dull to watch as England and could conceivably meet us in the final. Tournament football is about winning they don’t engrave boring or lucky on the trophy! Note I don’t think we will win but that’s because France and Spain both have better sides than us!

I think very few sides have been as boring and lacklustre as us. I've watched a few of the France games and they haven't been anything like as bad as people have suggested. They haven't played turgid negative football. They have struggled to score and struggled for fluency but they have still given a much better account of themselves than we have.

The sad thing is that I have watched so many "smaller" teams play much better and more exciting football than us. Yes they have been pragmatic at times but the likes of Austria and Turkey have been far more entertaining and daring with their football than us.

I fully expect the semi-final between us and the Netherlands to be a bore fest of two misfiring teams scared to have a go. Netherlands look like England with less talent.

Yeah agreed, i was listening to the Stick to Football podcast and Gary Neville (whilst having the **** taken out of him for referring to himself as the golden generation) was saying how when he played he'd have loved to have been drawn against the likes of Slovenia in the last 16 or Switzerland in the quarters.
Historically we've had the likes of Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Portugal etc

The reason for that though, is because we kept finishing second in the groups in that era, so we kept getting difficult teams in the 2nd round etc.

Exactly, he is contributing absolutely nothing to the team. He is just there because he is the captain. Making no runs and dropping to deep. Southgate is relying on the midfielders to score goals. I would say play Watkins or Toni from the start and bring on Kane if needed. We have not threaded or knocked the ball over the defence a single time in five games. We need runners up front.

That's because it was harder, 4 group stages back then and less 'fodder'. From memory england didn't even qualify in 2008

People say 'easy' routes and objectively there can be, but, no route is as 'easy' as it once was.

Smaller teams are more competitive than they used to be.

Find me a team that would prefer to play Spain or Germany over Switzerland. How about France or Portugal over Slovakia?

There are no easy games but some games are harder than others.

While I am no admirer of Southgate or the way he has the team playing, I think pointing the easy draw stick at him is a bit unfair.
According to FIFA, only Belgium and France are ranked above us in this tournament and they were both on England’s side of the draw should they have done the business. https://inside.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/men

The fact is they both somehow managed to get worse results than we did and stuffed up their own chances of an easier path. England winning the group, for a change, as has been said above helped avoid Germany in the KO’s which would no doubt have seen them go home.

They are still on course to do what England do best mind, flatter to deceive against weak opposition and be well beaten as soon as they come up against a decent side but you never know, might all change this week. :)
