UK plans age verification for porn websites from 2018

From what I recall, when Hameron first mentioned bringing this in, it was said that any sites not covering the new laws would be blocked in blighty.
No doubt it'd just be a simple VPN to get past that, but as others have said, VPNs will be banned next.

Also, considering how they plan to ban encryption, how can they think that giving out your personal info' & bank/credit card details to an online site will be safe.

Aah, that's right. The dinosaurs in govt don't understand any of the problems the rest of the world can see in plain sight.

I bet if there was a site for fellating severed Pigs heads, it'd get special treatment :p

Lmao yep,

A bunch of old dinosaurs wanting to ban encryption is rich. If that actually happens i'll eat my shoe live on ocuk... ketchup and all. The whole shoe.

Quoted for the potential lols

Remember, our glorious elected leaders have no idea how the real world works, let alone a subset of computing vernacular. I doubt many in charge of this country would survive if left to fend for themselves without an income, expense accounts and advisers :p

This is a going to be a massive failure.

Far more important things going on in the world.

Parents should be responsible for their children and what they do Online, not the Government.

This is just the first step of many. I have political bias at all, but the Tories are just downright dangerous.
Yes, imagine what they would be like with a real majority.
I'm in favour of age verification but not by credit card, that sounds dangerous. ID card?
Andi.

Nah, they'd manage in the real world with ease.
Just like the times one or two of them lived (existed...) on the same amount someone stuck on welfare gets for a week or two, only to go back to their mansions & their millions in the bank account, stating "I don't see what's so hard about it"

Can anyone find a list of MPs that voted for and against this? I can find the bill and its progress through parliament but I cannot find the actual vote and who voted for or against.

Can see this leading to anyone who does this getting scammed, how can we go from advice to avoid porn sites because of malware and viruses to now you must give them your cc details lol

Just like how we went from "never put your real name online" to "if you don't share your personal info on Facebook, you have something to hide!".

This is another stupid waste of money by this government to appease people who know absolutely nothing about how computers or the internet works. It's sad, really.

Can imagine gangs getting ready to register Pron-hud and other spelling mistakes and setup a fake front page to capture cc details lol

Really needs to be an independent age verification site - they give you a login that you can then use anywhere else - like a paypal style thing but just to prove age rather than give cc to potentially 100's of dodgy sites

Pandora's box is already open with regards to this. There are so many ways to obtain porn these days on the internet. You see loads even if you are just casually browsing reddit not looking for porn. Definitely not going to work.

All that will happen now, is it moves out of the UK entirely to avoid the red tape. Or continues to operate within the UK but has their site, money and "HQ" abroad. So all the "won't someone think of the children" crowd have achieved is made it even harder to regulate.

All that government meddling with the internet is doing is pushing people on to VPNs, so eventually they aren't going to be able to regulate it at all. It will be one big strongly encrypted blob. Unless they try and ban VPN ofc, but good luck enforcing that when half the country is using one.

I bought a VPN sub today before even reading this. It's like the US going into Vietnam, everyone will just go deep underground and make things even harder for them. Muppets.

At the end of the day I think this will just mean the demise of streaming sites in the UK and more people just turning back to pier to pier downloads or warez sites.

So how does this tie into a ban on TV shows that have explicit sex scenes?

Will the likes of Amazon require such age verification?
