That is a ridiculous reason not to call it genocide - eg Serbian and Rwandan genocides were surely between brothers in the same way...

Anyway I think a better reason not to call it genocide is that it doesn't seem like that's actually what has happened. War crimes yes, but the jump from there to genocide is quite a large one, unless Biden has a lot more evidence than we've seen so far...

Yeah Macron is looking weak once again imo.

I don't understand Macron's position. Is he really this keen to pander to Putin and does he really think Putin doesn't just see right through him?

Might be some domestic politics at play there too given the imminent elections. Le Pen seems to be even softer on Putin and it's not harming her, Macron probably aiming not to sound too anti-putin if he thinks it will push more voters to Le Pen.

Also despite his reasoning being off I wouldn't say disputing the genocide label really counts as pandering.

LONDON/SINGAPORE, April 13 (Reuters) - China's top offshore oil and gas producer CNOOC Ltd. (0883.HK) is preparing to exit its operations in Britain, Canada and the United States, because of concerns in Beijing the assets could become subject to Western sanctions, industry sources said.

Ties between China and the West have long been strained by trade and human rights issues and the tension has grown following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which China has refused to condemn.

The United States said last week China could face consequences if it helped Russia to evade Western sanctions that have included financial measures that restrict Russia's access to foreign currency and make it complicated to process international payments. read more

Interesting move by China and quite worrying as it's pretty much confirming where their allegiances lie

I think it also begins to confirm that Western financial sanctions will encourage other less reputable states to remove their financial dealings from within our sphere of influence. Which will be very helpful to the Chinese in setting up alternative and competing systems.

Talk about jumping out of the coal and into the fire

You know what.

I bet you Russia are going to attack Finland. :(

I know it sounds crazy ,but this rhetoric about not wanting NATO on his borders, he is going to get NATO on his border if Finland joins them and that is now Finlands definite plan.

It's all scary etc but this is like ww2 all over again. I bet you.

They already have Nato countries on their border. Norway, Lithuania, Estonia. This is not new. And what exactly is he going to attack Finland with? Is there anything left.

now that both russia and ukraine have basically said the peace talks are pointless, is there any reason why ukraine dont try and join nato?

I don't see how Russia could attack Finland at this point, other than with pot shots from long range missiles. A large proportion of their armed forces are tied up in Ukraine where they're being bled out. They have already lost a significant amount of equipment and manpower. The Finnish military would stop any invasion made up of what's left dead in its tracks.

Not to mention the logistical problems Russia is having keeping one war going, let alone another one...

There hasn't been as much buildup over the past decade either, which would probably make public opinion a little more difficult for Putin to manage, and make it more likely for other countries to get more directly involved.
