To be frank we shouldn't get involved on any level at all

We already did, that Association deal and support of Western politicians for protesters caused all of this turmoil.

It might have been a good move, but as I gathered we only seem to cause violence and destruction and then leave the country to deal with it themselves :(

Just like with Libya,Afghanistan,Iraq.

If we will help Ukraine to achieve great prosperity it would be great, but then again.... this is very doubtful since we are struggling ourselves let alone help nearly 50 million people stuck in Soviet era.

We cant deal with greece, which is a fraction of population and has fraction of the problems.... We wont be able to deal with ukraine, it is impossible.... But we made it seem like we will but in reality it was just a blatant lie.

It is pretty much a race war in my eyes, on one side you have Ukranian/EU nationalist that are doing eveything in their power not to be turned to the Chinese/Russian side..

It's actually the better deal to go with Russia though, all the power is going to come from China and Russia in the future, prosperity will emerge from Chinese/Russian money, China are on the ball and they don't intend on stopping..

China yes, Russia? I am not sure.... Currently Russians are worried that the Chinese will invade in near future, since Russia offers them everything to sustain their growth...

Yeah that's a while ago though, i think those two are certainly more friends than enemies in the long run of West v East.

Its not that great as it seems in all honesty.... As I understand Putin keeps mediating between the USA and China... Whoever Russia sides with should win but they are weaker than USA or China.

Time will tell, at least for now.. Russia and China relations are far cry of those of UK and USA.

Ukraine will join the EU eventually. Russia tries to bribe the Government of the Ukraine with money that will never filter down to the people. However the Ukrainians have had enough and know they are better off in the EU.

Also I feel that due to Fracking the EU and Ukraine won't bee reliant on Russian gas for much longer.

Nice :p I can take it seriously now!

In all honesty the country seems extremely messed up just now and it seems to be a lot to do with Russia trying to stop them getting close to the EU. Something about Russia trying to set up their own version of it with the Ukraine and some other countries if I remember.

Their people don't seem happy about this though so I understand why they want to do something about it when their government won't listen.

It's a lot more complicated than that. There's a definite split in Ukraine, which has ties both ways. It's not just the government wanting one thing and the people wanting the other. Besides, Ukraine couldn't afford to join the EU anyway. Russia is their biggest export market and a crucial supplier for gas (which Ukraine is getting a special deal on). It would cost a vast amount of money to upgrade Ukrainian industry and economy to fit it into the EU. It doesn't have it and the EU isn't going to give it to them. The EU probably doesn't have it spare anyway.

There's very ugly history between the two countries (going as far as something close to an attempt at ethnic cleansing by Russia against Ukraine) and many Ukranians would rather throw their lot in with the EU than with Russia, but it's not looking like they have much choice.

Well I learned something from GD!!!!

TBH while still keeping an eye on it all I have got is the BBC reports which didn't give me much to go off other than the killings and police movements.

Nice to see a relevent and informative GD thread, hope it lasts

Shocking violence over the past week - hopefully the worst of it is over.

Doesn't sound like that's going to be the case unfortunately. The news suggests the police are melting away around the country and gangs of of pro opposition members are arming up to take their place...

It really doesn't look good, either with a power vacuum or opposing para-militaries going at each other.

Whilst I can see where you're coming from OP. I think it runs deeper than that.

Ukraine would rather side with the EU than Russia. This all stems back to years of oppression under the soviet rein. Only in 1991 did Ukraine get its independance. The Ukrainian people want to rebuild their country in the right way, but government corruption wishes to side with Russia... probably being heavily paid to do so.

No so long ago, the president wanted the Ukrainian language band and for all Ukrainians to speak Russian!

I think Ukraine should join the EU.

Maybe Ukrainians look at Russia and don't like what they see. It's corrupt and opressive country where wealth is the preserve of very few. It's wealth is almost entirely based on oil and gas which will run out in less than 20 years if they continue to produce at their current output.

China has serious problems of their own.

No more corrupt than the EU.
