Both sides have shot down their own planes - Soviet era air-defences really don't seem to have been designed with much consideration for contested/complex air-space and more for just destroying "all the things" in the air. There is a good reason IMO all Russian air traffic is routed just outside of the maximum range of the S-300 and 400 complexes and why they seem to be inactive or semi-inactive a lot of the time.

How do they know what plane is flying is it a computer or manual controlled? as it could trigger whatever plane flys over surely.

Difficult to cover it properly in a post - but it would not normally be left in an automatic mode - targets would be selected manually, there will also be varying levels of friend or foe identification and monitoring of civilian traffic depending on the setup and environment they are operating in.

While more about HIMARS this video posted about recently covers some aspects of how it works https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceskPbDtTzY

He used to make decent films as I recall, although maybe more cheesy than decent!

Wonder what happened, because he could do a piece on himself.

From what I recall he only made 1-2 decent movies then rode on that success as long as he could with a lot of trashy movies.

It looks like the Russian airfield in Crimea got hit quite surgically.

Looks like a crater at the top of centre where a building used to be as well - making it unlikely to be the result of an accident - though no footage so far has any of the usual evidence of artillery or cruise missiles immediately before the explosions - artillery capable of that kind of range and damage makes quite a noticeable impression coming in.

EDIT: Eliot Higgins covers most of the points I was making in the thread from that.

Something I was talking about a few weeks back:

Though the MOD seems to think it unlikely Russia can build up the man power through volunteers to make any decisive changes in the war - maybe something NK man power might be pushed into maybe.

I suspect the goal will be to put pressure on Kyiv again potentially as part of a new winter offensive if conditions allow for it but at the same time not sure Russia has the strategic patience or the demands of the current situation to wait that long.
