Completely agree, and the time to make a stand was when they deployed, and used, nerve agents on British soil.

2021 Britain hasn't a backbone for a scrap right now.
We need the US to do any heavy lifting and even then it would be hugely unpopular amongst our public to do anything cohesive. We'd struggle to get out our houses without our face masks on even with Russian paratroopers landing in the back garden.

You'd think they had invaded and taken over Ukraine, all they've done is move troops to the border for exercise

There is a lot more going on on top of the troops movement.
Been going on for years but pretty much kinetic for a while with a lot of "grey zone" activity for the latest buzzwords.

What do you mean by that? It's surely been the opposite of "kinetic" for a while with relative peace. It's got potential for things to get a bit kinetic in the near future if Russian armour moves in.

Nobody is doing anything about Myanmar either because both China and Russia sent important military personnel in a show of support, who were on hand for a recent military parade.
I think that diplomacy is the most important instrument for solving this question.
Russia should call all of ethnic Russians who live in Eastern Ukraine to move to the Russian territories, while Ukraine is allowed to keep its regions, and admit that Crimea is part of the Federation now.
In this way, the losses for Ukraine will be smallest, and they will not have the natural inner opposition from the ethnic Russians.
Otherwise, the conflict will always remain and people will fight over the Ukrainian government's plans or wishes to join the EU/Nato.
Is this even technically possible? What do you expect - a nuclear warhead to reach Moscow? Do you really think that it's possible to penetrate the Russians new air defense systems?

Lot more going on behind the scenes this time - significant amount of supplies moving in support. I'd say this one is quite serious. They seem to be preparing to deal with incoming casualties though not at a level which would indicate an imminent full scale invasion so probably up to something whether military or political or a mix I don't know.

My guess is that it will be a spontaneous uprising by Ukrainians who want the Ukraine to become part of Russia and Russia will not have anything to do with it at all. Absolutely nothing. Not anything at all. Nothing to see here. The Russian solders are not Russian soldiers. The Russian military equipment and logistics is not Russian. Nothing untoward is happening. By the way, does the EU need Russian gas?
Lot of propaganda flying tonight - but keeping half an eye on it for as long as I have at least half of it is videos from ~2014-2018. Between the lines seems to be a lot of it is aimed at political posturing - about half of the stuff coming from what is probably Russian bots is verifiable information but seems too overtly so and lots of hysteria from those who want to see NATO involved.

Not sure how much you are aware of what is going on but it's been a bit tasty on the "front line" for a period of time, going back a few year now.
Just one of those events that isn't interesting enough for news.

We have NATO allies in the region.
I am sure within european history there are some signals and lessons to look back on regarding things like this... scratching my head, maybe can't think.
One of the Russian ministers says he's worried about the situation, that of the Ukrainians ramping up the violence.
Now this is funny, was asked about whether Russia and the Ukraine should sit back down to sort a new cease fire out he says they can't as they have never been in the Ukraine and they have no Military there so are not a player so can't sign

The west, well outside of the US possibly has the balls to do anything, they could steam roll the Ukraine and we wouldn't do anything other than sanctioning a few of his cronies, the other Baltic States must be getting twitchy with the response, NATO or not they are a free country being invaded by a hostile nation in Europe.
Let's hope lessons have been learnt by the Ukrainians this time around.

As is also noted there these preparations seem to be beyond exercise level but intended to be seen and possibly more "coercive" in nature as one comment put it while falling short of invasion scale. Certainly a serious situation possibly one looking for a pretext but seems to be an effort towards more political than military goals.
Possibly and hopefully, the US has had its drones up so will have a good picture of what equipment is around now
Ukraime now has javelins and counter battery equipment/training plus electronic warfare so hopefully give them a bit more to think about.
No movement of air assets unless they have moved the magical s400 units there.

On a more serious note I hope the recent talk about increasing our nuclear arsenal isn't in response to background information about stuff like this with the intention of keeping pending likely conflict remote and conventional.
Russia doesn't need to move S-400 forward their existing installations are within range for general purposes additionally can be complimented by more mobile assets for point defence, etc.
Russia has only moved around 1/10th of the assets up though compared to what they'd need for a larger scale incursion never mind full scale invasion but coming up to the time of year where conditions are more favourable for heavy armour movement and a longer campaign so always a bit concerning. If something bigger scale does happen probably more towards May with less risk of weather bogging things down.
