A research vessel... honestly, guess we better hope an 'accidental' torpedo doesn't clip the ship, we didn't do **** when they murdered a British citizen on our own soil after all.

It’s not just a research vessel, it’s multi role, a mine sweeper is probably quite an apt thing to send when you don’t want to escalate things.

True, though also just enough to cause the Russians to become a little bit paranoid - there is of course a surveillance aspect to it too.

We shoulda sent HMS Massive, that’d shut the Russians up.
Only problem would been fitting it through the Dardanelles.

I was more referring to manpower but our actual ready assault capabilities are cut to the bone - definitely not upto large scale landings against an established, nation backed, defending force.

Perhaps not, but advising the Ukrainians on potential raids etc... could well be useful.

The bow wave alone would reach Moscow from the Med, at its full speed the North Pole would be at risk. It has to sail around titanic so it doesn’t ground on the wreck.

I remember walking up the aft gangway when I first joined. By the time I got the forrad one it was time go on draft.

Ukraine is in no position for a war with Russia, it would honestly be like the best Christmas gift they could ever give to them if they was serious about this.

That said... things could be getting heated soon, since Ukraine is being very naughty and trying to make Crimea dry of water by blocking a strategic water canal that feeds them.

Something doesn't have to be to the advantage of the country, though. Just to the advantage of those in charge of it. Petro Poroshenko used the incident with the Russians blocking the non-compliant Ukranian vessel as an excuse to declare Martial Law in any provinces he wasn't popular in. That lets him shut down news agencies or journalists he doesn't like, arrest people at will and more. The elections are in... two months? If it's not enough and he needs a war to stay in power, are we sure he wont do it? The Ukrainian government has a heavy Nazi presence, after all.

Wasn't it one of OUR lot that wanted to mine the sea though? Pretty sure it was.
