From the BBC
The crossing is more than 100 miles from Ukrainian-held territory. One explosives expert told the BBC said the fire was probably not caused by a missile.

"The lack of obvious blast / fragmentation damage on the road surface suggests that an air-delivered weapon was not used," he said

He said it was possible that "a well-planned attack from below may have been the cause".
Makes sense, given how clean the break appears to be on the road bridge

Russians currently in Crimea, Ukraine, aren't getting out in a hurry.

Radio controlled barge anybody? Or drifted down on the tide like a floating mine or like Elizabethan fireships a la Francis Drake.

This worries me more than anything else I've seen in this conflict (apart from the inital invasion, of course)

My guess is that Crimea is the red line that triggers a nuclear response from Russia. The Russian military there can no longer resupply or retreat and most likely faces total destruction.

I get why people are celebrating this and obviously can't fault the Ukrainians from fighting as hard and as well as they have been - but wars, once started have a momentum of their own and can spread far beyond what the original protagonists envisaged. This is the beginning of that.

The only way this is going to end is by negotiation and increasingly I see no quarter or even glimmer of a way out for Russia. If they were not a nuclear armed state, I'd say fine, crush them completely. But they are and we have to find a way to give them a choice not to use them.

It may well be that a nuclear conflict is now inevitable, after the inital exchange and if subsequently that spins out of control, which it may well do - its possible that millions of people, including posters on here, will not survive.

I was born in the 70's and grew up in the 80's and can well remember the kind of low level background existential dread living of under the MAD doctrine.

We should all be a lot more concerned than we seem to be.

Swedish media (military guy) saying demolition charges for that clean destruction as for timing it with that train.... That seems either super duper well planned/ timed or a bit of an inside job.
Interesting times. See how this progresses.

We're an aggressive, self centred, self destructive obnoxious species - I resigned myself a long time ago to believing we will probably destroy ourselves for no good reason.

Either that or while we're bickering an asteroid takes us out as we look at our shoes more than the skies.

I don't want it to happen but I don't worry about it anymore. At least the planet would eventually heal and maybe have another go.

Until the sun rips the planet apart :)
So much to look forward to.

Wow I grew up in the 70's impending nuclear war and doom never crossed my mind.......

But that bridge explosion wowzers.

Completely understand, but if we appease Putin and let him take even more land from Ukraine, when is it going to be enough for him? He will continue to take more land and go into other countries thinking that the rest of the World are too scared and that his army is indeed the 2nd best in the World and with this, we'll see hundreds of thousands more dead, raped and tortured. He is a bully and needs to realise that it is him that has caused this and continues to cause this. He is a bully and a coward, getting others to do his dirty work whilst he bunkers down and gives orders.

That's the issue.

It's also pretty much the attitude that was taken when he went into Crimea and we can see how that panned out.
