Exactly this. I would die defending this country against invasion to protect my family. But no way would I go and fight in another country to make a politician look good.

If that was the case there would be no one signing up for any of the forces.
There is 112,000 experienced army personal now.

I would not like to be the person to cry wolf and not sign up.
There lives would be hell after.
 
I find the optics on this situation quite strange overall - though Russia has amassed enough equipment forward staged for the initial push of an invasion there just isn't the amounts in reserve to support sustained action. Though they've spent the last few months improving supply lines, communications, medical and so on both to and along the border(s) it isn't to the level of an invasion. More crucially the man power falls far short even assuming subterfuge might have been used to mask true numbers they'd be at bare minimums if that for what would be required.

That said a lot of this isn't just being done idly and the manner of subterfuge used in more recent months to build up equipment levels and using the armed forces, sometimes with COVID as a pretext, for broader infrastructure projects which also just happen to include work advantageous to action involving Ukraine, is a particularly Russian precursor to actual action.

EDIT: This also isn't defensive in nature - the choices of units and equipment are sub-optimal, though effective, towards that end compared to what Russia has available. When often better defensive choices are closer and/or available.

I said most, 112000 is not most people. If you think we are going to have millions signing up to go and fight the Russians you will be very disappointed.

Does that figure include TA and Reservist units?

Of course, there’s 4-5 soldiers in support roles for every solider in a combat role, so don’t be think there’s 112,000 infanteers that can fix bayonets and charge the gates of Moscow.

It would be prudent to take on board whatever intelligence we know about their detection capabilities before risking expensive assets on the assertion that allied stealth capabilities work vs Russia's anti-stealth capabilities. The Pilot and the many years it takes to train them, and the even more expensive asset the planes themselves should not be put at risk for overconfidence in technological superiority. To be cautious is sensible when we're talking about taking on Russia however ridiculous it may be.

True however there budget has shrunk since the Soviet era, back then we were petrified of thier tanks and aircraft until South Korea got some after the wall went down and some pilots defected with the aircraft, needless to say we vastly overestimated thier equipment at that time.

The amount of hot air and ridiculous claims talking about invincible weapons etc smacks of desperation and attempting to gloss over deficiencies.

What they do have are numbers, as always.
