Effectively the same thing - a loss of combat power. So whether a soldier is dead or missing in action it results in the same outcome when it comes to your fighting force

That could be the difference between the Ukraine and Russia numbers though. Maybe Ukraine are holding 30k POWs

The total Russian losses could end up close to 100,000 by the years end if this keeps up!
I think that the new 90K number indicates that there is a rather large number of soldiers going awol.

I think a big chunk of that number will be awol not dead.

Unlikely, most AWOL would become injured, dead or POWs pretty quickly. A big chunk will be injuries, which can be a ratio like say 1:2 deaths:injuries, that ratio could well be lower than usual thanks to a lack of medical support within the Russian armed forces. Granted some injured can return to operations, the 90k figure would only include those seriously injured who can't return... so AFAIK it's 90k made up of:

Dead, injured(and can't return), POW

Also, that 90k figure doesn't include contractors from Wagner, the National Guard (which includes the Chechens/Kadyrov's guys too) or the "separatist" fighters from LPR and DPR, it just refers to the Russian Armed forces.

AFAIK the Ukraine figure of 60k-ish is simply dead enemy from all of those.

It's fair to say that they have surprised some "experts" who claimed they didn't have the means to see this war through, past a few months.
So who are these so called experts?

Before the war started the world was under the impression Russia was a superpower who could run through Ukraine in a week or less.

As for long term there is nothing pointing to Russia having limited supplies that wouldn't last a few months.

In reality the west believed Russia's hype, or certainly couldn't disprove it.
