Hardly surprising having wasted the bulk of somewhat competent Wagner mercs and then replacing them with prisoners who have been tasked to act as commissars to ensure the mobilised forces can't retreat. The moment Ukraine moves forward the whole system falls apart because the actual armed forces in the rear don't trust the mercs who don't trust the mobilised and they can't trust any information about the front so very little point in staying put since air support is irrelevant.

I hope Ukraine can mess up the Russian's lines enough that they can maintain this sink.

Putin needs Bakhmut so he can show the a skeptical public Russia is still capable of winning battles, what he won't tell then though is just how many thousands of men had to die for what is at this point a glorified PR exercise (must be costing Putin a fair bit as well given the large number of Wagner mercenaries involved). Totally mornic thought processes, in the fight for the city of Severodonetsk Russia lost anywhere between 4 to 11 thousand men trying to take that city which resulted in a pause in fighting and they haven't been able to push on since.
 
Heard a rumour that AFU are using Maxim`s - WW1 trench style and we have a repeat of the Somme, this time its Russians dieing by the thousands.

The Kadyrovs placed behind them all to shoot retreating forces must have run out of ammo.
