From CNN: U.S is sending Patriot missiles and JDAM kits to Ukraine in the new weapons package. The JDAM units will turn Ukraine's stock pile of dumb bombs into GPS guided munitions that can be launched from planes with a 28km range

Thats a maximum of 28km range, which requires high altitude and high speed. A more realistic range for the altitude that the UAF currently fly at to stay alive is <12km per JDAM so quite short range but a nice "cheap" precision weapon in plentiful numbers.

IIrc they bolt onto standard dumb bombs of all sorts, depending on the package I think it just requires a laser designator or GPS coordinates to be preloaded. I think they've been retrofitted to loads of aircraft as it was a cheap way to updated Korean war era stuff to be more effective, both the aircraft and hundreds of thousands of bombs during Vietnam etc

Thats the issue that will slow their usage down slightly, integration in the aircraft, because even the simplest of dumb bombs need (for modern aircraft) wiring and software adding to the aircraft to allow those bombs to be fused, armed and fed release signals, usually from a specialised computer (SMS for example). NATO uses a set MIL-STD-1760 set of connections, which the UAF doesn't have on any of their aircraft, so those will need modifying, probably along the lines of the adaption of the LAU-118 HARM launchers the UAF is already using.

So now we've either got a Soviet bomb with a US JDAM kit kludged onto it or, and I think this is more probable, the US has given/will give the UAF a bunch of the Mk80 series bombs which the JDAM kit is designed for so now all thats left is the wiring needed to hook up the wiring for arm, fuse and release and away they go and a a stand-alone SMS system for them and "hope" that they release smoothly for the launch aircraft.

Any target co-ordinates can, like the HARM, be pre-programmed into the weapon manually before the launch aircraft takes off, which makes them useless for rapid;ly moving targets like Shoot & Scoot artillery etc but ideal for things like HQ's, supply depots etc, with the disadvantage that the low release altitude means the launch aircraft has to be closer to the defended targets.

Just passed 3000 tanks destroyed and tomorrow guarateed to pass 100k Ork scalps before Christmas .

Keep feeding that grinder Mr Putin and burn your countries future.

That graph is grim reading if your a Russian solider. The numbers can't be verified but it's probably a good yard stick to give an idea of the causality rates the Russian's are suffering. From day 0 to day 150 the Russians were losing around 2000 every 50 days but after that the line skyrockets and between 250 and 300 the rate has tripled to around 6000 (and this is during the mud season).

Not that it matters but if the Kremlin's decided it's acceptable losses is a hard limit then they expect to be fighting roughly another 100-200 days depending on how accurate Ukraine is tabulating these kills as it's somewhat unknown what is happening to the maimed nowadays as chances of surviving triage after the unlikely event that you even get medevac are probably still minimal.

Summer for Crimea still seems rational to me.

I don't see this ending any time soon myself, Russia will keep throwing more resources at it (and the rumour mill suggests another wave of mobiks in Jan is likely).

They don't really seem to care that they're losing men and old equipment as long as it causes chaos.

if Ukraine survives the winter with the energy infrastructure being pummelled by missiles, and gets more AA to remove that threat or lessen it, then we're just back to who can win the ground war.

I think we're looking at a protracted war, which effectively turns into a staring contest. While putin is in charge, he can't back down. A change in Russian leadership might lead to a policy change, but that's far from certain.

I wouldn't count on it, best strategy continues to be sending weapons to Ukraine so it can defend itself.

Maybe some assistance in helping Ukraine make their own long range guided missiles if not outwardly sending them new ones, Russia can't really argue if the missiles Ukraine sends are not officially Western origin.

Nothing is certain, but I can't see Russia backing down in the short term.

The question is, how much pain will Russia take in pursuit of their goals? I suspect that is a lot as, once they lose, they have a very hostile NATO member on their doorstep. At this point, they have nothing to lose, except the lives of their soldiers.

they have a very hostile NATO member on their doorstep

That is putting it lightly, they will have a hostile NATO/EU bloc on their border, not just Ukraine but I can't see the west collectively trusting Russia diplomatically for a long, long time, not unless Russia has an internal change of leadership and makes amends somehow.

They already had hostile NATO members on their doorstep before they decided to add more by invading Ukraine. Nor does Russian "Success" in the war really change that - their best case outcome is that claim a chunk of Ukraine, leaving the rest free. Putin's fever dreams aside, this argument just doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

(Also, I don't think Ukraine will join NATO - at least not soon).

Exactly. They have nothing to lose.

Except global respect and position, this war will plunge Russia back economically and diplomatically for a very, very long time.

Essentially they are weakening themselves, and it's gone too far for them to retreat so they see the only option as continuation.

If they capitulate now then Ukraine will demand war reparations and other concessions, which they won't want to give. Once Ukraine (hopefully/eventually) kicks Russia back to the pre-war borders, then I don't really see what Russia can do other than silo itself off from the west and enter another cold war era, or admit defeat and pay the piper.

If Russia left today and made no steps to pay damages, then they would just remain a pariah state, ultimately it's up to them.

Whole war makes no sense, especially if as Russia has shown, you can't even win it convincingly.

This one always makes me laugh, if NATO really wanted to wade in it could do a lot more.

Even some long range missiles would cripple Russia's offensive campaign, hitting crucial supply and material depots far behind the lines would then be possible.

NATO as a whole has barely handed Russia anything compared to what it could do, also most of NATO isn't sat there trying to spend their entire budgets on a war-footing economy like Russia is attempting.

All of NATO’s potential would end Russia in days. He’s such a clown.

Such a power move. From the frontlines to congress and apparently with a flag handed to him on the frontline too. I hope they get every piece of equipment needed. **** Russia.
