Putin isn't looking for an off ramp - that is an invention of some in the West who don't know any other way.

I agree. Looking at and listening to Putin (albeit translated), he seems in a rage. Expert analysts seem to think a full scale invasion of Ukraine is 10x more likely than it was this morning.

We'll have to wait and see what NATO/EU/USA say later on.

Question is, why not invade now and go through motions. For what exactly.

Even BBC just published '5 reasons why Putin might not Invade'

I'm not necessarily saying this leads to an all out invasion but an off ramp or pacification isn't what Putin is looking for here - that is superimposing US/EU thinking.

Who knows, could be any number of reasons. It's easier to invade if it looks like Ukraine have attacked them first... they'll want something nice and concrete on that front.

I think he'll go for the whole country, and the west will sit and watch.
It'll be interesting from the China & Taiwan perspective. I'm sure there's less of an interest in protecting the Ukraine from Russia than Taiwan from China for obvious reasons and there's a debate there to be had whether that's right.

Some analysis that can be quite accurate predicts Russia will invade but I'm not convinced myself. Putin I think is an intelligent mastermind, I think he's seeing how far he can push things.

Concerning thing if this does kick off is what happens globally, maybe can look back through history at the previous pandemic and what impact that might have had. Covid has wrecked havoc - debt, wealth and social mood etc.

Time will tell. I believe that there is a good chance this will de-escalate for now. Perhaps we'll return to it at later date.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday warned of a “swift and firm response” from the U.S. and its allies if Russian President Vladimir Putin moved to recognize territories in eastern Ukraine that have been locked in conflict since 2014 as "independent."

Blinken said that an appeal from the State Duma, Russia’s lower house of parliament, for Putin to recognize the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in eastern Ukraine as independent would violate the Minsk agreements, an international effort agreed to in 2015 to end fighting between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists in the region.

“Enactment of this resolution would further undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, constitute a gross violation of international law, call into further question Russia’s stated commitment to continue to engage in diplomacy to achieve a peaceful resolution of this crisis,” Blinken said, adding that such a move would “necessitate a swift and firm response from the United States in full coordination with our Allies and partners.”

So I'm not sure how you're interpreting tonight's events as Putin looking to de-escalate the situation

For what exactly? No one will believe Russia regardless.

Perhaps internally there are issues? The Russian security council earlier looked a bit of a mixed bag in some respects.

I saw that earlier. Some huge calls are going to be made in the next few hours.

and why the **** should they? Their propganda and gaslighting is clown tier. It's often worse than satire.
But you are looking at it through western eyes. Russia doesn't give a ****.

Yes exactly, they do not care. Putins message outlined that very well.

If they are to invade, there is no reason to wait and spend more money on mobilization. Quite frankly he gave enough explanation to invade whole of Europe let alone Ukraine.

Because majority of sanctions that had teeth were agreed if Russia invaded Ukraine 'Further' these donbass regions are considered lost since 2015.

It allows everyone to win something including Ukraine, who always recognized these regions as moscow occupied. Now at least, Minsk is dead which ukranians hate.

The only concern I have is that NATO/US will stick sanctions that were planned for invasion of Ukraine at which point Russia will have no further reason to hold back from whole invasion from Ukraine.

Pretty much.

Before that, he did same thing in Georgia and that is how it all ended. I'm just not sure why is this causing such poo storm quite frankly. I personally believe this is a de-escalation. We're all just going to posture and fling our male organs around and go home.

Sanctions will be imposed in name only.
