I feel your frustration... but imagine if we do something and he said "**** you, I told you not to mess, nuke x10 random nato targets"... it's quite grim. Now sure, I'm being very pessimistic about his reaction, but the man seems deranged to me, and frankly with so much at stake I don't think it's worth it. It's torture seeing a progressive society like Ukraine wanting to break free from Russia be dismantled and destroyed - but it's perilous political "game" - if it goes wrong, no one wins.

This is why nuclear weapon decommissioning can't come soon enough (if anyone actually adheres to the rules - which, lets face it, won't).

I think this will have long term repercussions regardless.

I genuinely haven't felt about any conflict like I do about this one and I think it's because this seems so unprovoked and over the top. I would get it had Ukraine been fighting with them or bombed them but its basically a systematic annihilation of a people and country that was around long before Russia was. You are right he is a deranged loon. But I thought the whole point of the Nukes was we will all lose but I think the issue is no one except America would have the balls to actually use them. It's just a shocking sad time. I must be getting old as right now I think after everything the worlds been through in two years why now when we are all just recovering.

You're being silly. Putins invasion is absolutely awful, but it is genius. He's pulled this off Infront of the whole world. Whilst we sat/sit twiddling our thumbs.

It isnt genius. What is so genius about it?

What could anyone have done to prevent it?

BBC:

Reuters news agency is reporting black smoke has been seen rising over the Ukrainian defence intelligence headquarters in central Kyiv.

Ukraine says some of its military command centres have been hit by Russian missile strikes this morning after Moscow launched a military operation against its neighbour.

You don't have to like or approve of something to recognise it as genius.

Thread is getting very LOL worthy now.

So much manure flying around that the West are the bad guys in this, the west has done nothing but offer people a better way of life and useless stuff.

War and pestilence often go together I'm afraid :(.

This situation is a perfect example of why no country will give up nuclear arms until something better comes along, Nuclear arms pretty much guarantee peace between nations armed with them as war becomes a futile exercise.

Yep because no one wants to use them, but it also means that people (like Putin) can do stuff like this with little repercussion,.

What is genius about visibly surrounding a country and then invading it? Seems pretty basic to me.

The West weren't fooled, we did what we could within the realms of what was sensible with the circumstances we have. Only mistake we made was allowing Russia any presence in major supply chains once it became clear they'd become belligerent with it and that goes back through several administrations.

If it goes wrong it's game over for everyone.

This could be Russia beaten back and putin having a paddy.
It could be NATO expanding.
It could be NATO being drawn in.
Even if the sanctions don't stop it they do hurt.

I don't think it's genius.

Ukraine is just first step. Overall goal is to take back everything under the Soviet banner
No it's not, that is uninformed nonsense.
It is mainly to stop the expansion of NATO from former Soviet countries or counties that Russia once had a sphere of influence over such as Slavic nations but are now members of NATO. :-
  • Hungary.
  • Czech Republic.
  • Poland.
  • Bulgaria.
  • Estonia.
  • Latvia.
  • Lithuania.
  • Romania.
Of these Estonia, Latvia, and Estonia were part of the Soviet Union, though these aren't Slavic in nature they do have a sizeable population of ethnic Russians. Though there is practically no chance of Putin invading these as they are now members of NATO.

Once the Ukrainians got rid of their Pro-Russian president after widely regarded as rigged election and then, with the encouragement of the U.S, started making noises about joining NATO, this was the last straw for Putin, who effectively said, "this far, and no further".

The only other former Soviet/Slavic country with pretensions of following democracy and leaning more to the west was Belarus and that, with the approval of Putin, has been firmly and violently nipped in the bud.

The only way that Putin can really prevent Ukraine from ever joining NATO was to invade it. Hence we have today.

It's 'genius' because his friend Trump said so.

In the sane world Trump, Johnson and the majority of the Conservative and Republican parties are Russian assets swimming in dirty money.

It's not really genius though is it? all he has done is prove that the west won't risk an all out war over the Ukraine something which any half intelligent person could have told you a year ago. It might be considered genius if he managed to invade a NATO member state without provoking a reaction as that would actually be a challenge rolling over the Ukraine unopposed is a foregone conclusion.

One of the Tories said this morning on the BBC that military aid would be given to Ukraine.

It already has been since 2014, just none lethal, lethal aid was being sent as of a few days ago iirc.

Still don't understand, Russia may get Ukraine, but they have isolated themselves from the vast majority of the world potentially forever, not so smart.

It really is, he said he was prepared for everything and it's looking like he was bar the Ukrainian resistance his forces are encountering
