How about a VW Scirocco? Reliable, rapid enough if you get the 1.8i engine. Ok, only 3 door but why does it HAVE to have 5 doors???

I'm also on the lookout for my first car, would a Rover 200/400 series be a good choice? Preferebly under £1000.

Fenderbass, you've done it now. You said the R word. Soon, 3/4 of this forum will come down on you like a ton of bricks. But before they do, I'll add that I've owned 3 Rovers and have enjoyed every minute of ownership.
If you get the old Mk2 shape (before 1995) they're less prone to head gasket failure, are bigger inside, have a much bigger boot and are just built considerably better than the bubble shape models.
You can pick them up for peanuts too. I knew of a few mint examples going for under £400 a short while ago.
