Underwhelemd by the 'next' generation of consoles and games?

I think that's a little bit of an exaggeration. The GPU is really the only bit that you could *do* with upgrading, the rest of your PC would be fairly capable of playing modern games, and when you can get something like a 7950 for less than £200 with 3 games, it's not a bad price at all.

I will confess with Nvidia's latest round of price cuts I'm tempted to pick up a new GTX 770 for £230 so I can play Battlefield4! I do have it pre-ordered for PS4 but I'm starting to think that it would be better on my PC with a GTX770 and it would also mean I could likely run Titanfall better than the XB1 too when it's released. In fact if I can forego Forza5 maybe I'd be better of going without the new consoles and just spending the money upgrading my video card?

Choices....choices....

I personally can't tell the difference in graphics, but I've never been that much into graphics, I had an ATI 9700 pro and ATI 9800 pro back in the days when they was top dog but since then I've brought macs with mobile graphics cards and game on consoles only.

I saw this video the other night and I could actually tell the difference, shame there wasn't a PC in the comparison.

I most admit that the xbone does look better than the ps4, thou I'm still getting a ps4.

This is related to my point before about how people have a limited perception of quality.

I understand why you think the Xbox One version of BF4 looks better, but it's not actually that it looks "better" in terms of graphical capability, it's that you prefer the contrast and saturation in the Xbox One shots.

It's come up that the contrast and saturation differences are due to the footage being captured incorrectly. I'm not sure if any more developments have been made.

These images show, outside of the contrast and saturation differences, that the PS4 version is more graphically rich.

You'd be better off with a 7950 or 7970 than a 770. 770s are limited by their 2GB of VRAM and 256bit memory bus.

For consoles, the question is, what games do you want one for? If they're mainly on PC too I'd just upgrade your graphics card.

I am interested in a PS4, I already have a pretty high end PC, but I like the PS4 exclusives (the same reason I have a PS3).

I am not getting a PS4 on launch though, I typically don't buy things on launch (except the PS Vita) as I'm not that fussed about getting them straight away.

I've always tended to go for Nvidia as I've found the cards more reliable and the drivers more stable so I'd probably still go for the green team.

Most of the games I want to play are actually multiplatform ones coming out on PC or PS4 too(Battlefield 4, Witcher 3, Destiny, Titanfall, The Division, Elder Scrolls Online).

I think I'll keep my PS4 pre-order as £350 seem like a good deal given it's apparent power/specs and there will always be console exclusives that the PC won't get or will have to wait ages for.

However I'm struggling to decide whether to stick with my XB1 pre-order at this point though. The only thing stopping me cancelling is that I have a day1 edition with Forza included and that's the one game I want and require the console to play at this point. However £430 for one game seems a bit excessive and all this talk of 720p being the standard res for most XB1 games is starting to put me off!

£200 for a video card upgrade is increasingly starting to seem like a much more sensible option but I think I'll wait another week or two before deciding what to do.

I assume there won't be any issues cancelling a pre-order from Amazon as long as I do it a week or so before release and it's dispatch?

More of the same with a bigger and better overhead than before? Nope, can't say I'm underwhelmed in what that could bring us.

Considering what the PS3 and Xbox 360 has brought to the table with its aged and limited hardware, even now. I can't see how the next gen hardware spec can be anything other than exciting.

Unchartererererd, God of War, MGS, Heavy Rain. Imagine games of those caliber designed on hardware unconstrained by 256mb ram or dated GPU rendering.

Underwhelmed? Nope. But then I'm not short sighted either.

Great to hear a balanced view from a computer games fan :)

I can definitely see the appeal of going gaming PC with the fact consoles don't seem to be doing much to catch up. When the Steam/Valve box comes out that should really shake things up.

How can you not be impressed by this?:

And this is an open world game only a couple months from the console launch, imagine what will be possible in 3 years

I think it looks good, but I thought GTA4 looked look on Youtube until it came out and was a botched 576p to up the framerate.
Sadly fewer and fewer trailers of games are the real deal these days.

If I'm honest I just want the PS4 (which I will almost certainly buy) to be like my PS3 but with proper HD games and can play my HD TV series off a USB stick. I am an old fashioned gamer in that I prefer good solid single player games on consoles. Prancing round the living room in front of a camera does not interest me.

I like to use the plane scene in Uncharted 3 as a point of reference, Keeping in mind what that game is running on hardware wise. And looking at what developers are being given to work with now.

PS3: 256mb ram, one of the original bluray plays, which limited access speeds and an aged GPU.

PS4: 8gb DDR5, a decent Bluray player and whatever the spec is of the GPU.

Take a look at this scene in unchartererererd 3.

Up it to 720p obviously

and then try and grasp the reality of what the spec difference between the 2 machines could bring.

Statistically, this isn't really true. I know some have brand preference, but the reliability thing isn't true. Do a little research and you'll realise nVidia is the one with the actual reliability issues, and they're the only one out of the two that have had drivers actually kill a graphics card dead.

My point? Don't spend more money on the same or less performance based on "truths" that people like to peddle.

That aside, it's not worth buying in to a 2GB 256bit bus graphics card NOW because they're already suffering with current games.

Most of the games I want to play are actually multiplatform ones coming out on PC or PS4 too(Battlefield 4, Witcher 3, Destiny, Titanfall, The Division, Elder Scrolls Online).

This is why I want a PS4, and why I have a PS3 too, any multiplatform games, I get on PC.

It sounds like you want an Xbox One more than a PS4, as all the games you want on PS4 are multiplatform anyway.

As I've been saying before, people are buying Xboxes for the Xbox games, not for the specs.

£200 for a video card upgrade is increasingly starting to seem like a much more sensible option but I think I'll wait another week or two before deciding what to do.

If you went for a 7950, it'd be £160. :p

I assume there won't be any issues cancelling a pre-order from Amazon as long as I do it a week or so before release and it's dispatch?

I assume so, they don't take payment until dispatch anyway, so you should be able to cancel any time until then.

Thanks for the comments Spoffle. Very helpful.

I think that's the dilemma about the XB1. It's specs are inferior but the current MS game exclusives (Forza,Titanfall,Halo,) make me want it more than the PS4 at this point in time. However if the PS4 games all came out at 1080p vs the XB1's 720p I'd be frustrated at having paid more for the inferior console for the majority of games.

Any how just to add some balance to the XB1 and console negativity in this thread check out the launch trailer for Forza 5 (which mercifully is running in 1080p/60fps)

I don't think anyone could anyone feel underwhelmed if you compare that to racing games on the current gen system!

There's just no "oh god I got to have and play that game" game.

I wanted street fighter 5 or a truly next gen fifa or forza/gt when I look at forza 5 xbox one footage or fifa next gen I just think hmm not too much of an upgrade from the 360 or ps3 versions.

The leap isn't there it just feels like +1 on resolution and anti aliasing.

No idea why you think forza 5 looks so amazing the in game graphics don't look anything special to me I don't get it ? the tracks and scenery look like they could run on a ps3 or 360 to me ? just about, yes it's better looking than forza 4 but not by a big amount at all.

I think you just expected too much and now you're drowning in a pool of disappointment. I've been just dandy with current gen graphics and next-gen is giving that nice brush up to what I was already happy with. Are you a heavy pc gamer? Perhaps playing things in max settings and at out of this world resolutions might be a factor lol? :p

I kind of agree with the op but we are at the start of a new generation of consoles and regardless of limitations or advantages of either console, it is way to premature to start knocking visuals until all the wrinkles have been ironed out.

The more I see of the new games the more dissapointed int he new systems I get. I upgraded my pc early this year. Nothing fancy just a i5 2500k and £200 nvidia graphics card and games look quite a bit better then what I'm seeing from the next gen.

I've gone from pre ordering both consoles after there announcements to cancelling the xbone, and now considering canceling the ps4. This next gen just isn't grabbing my attention at the moment. Shame.

My level of enthusiasm and excitement for these next gen consoles doesn't come close to the levels/highs I had towards the release of the ps3 and 360.

Only a small handfull of next gen games have made me think wow. And even then im left a little annoyed because a lot of these so called next gen games would look just as good on current gen consoles.

Games that have wow'd me
Killer Instinct
Infamous
Kill Zone
Titan Fall

This is one of the main reasons I plan not to pick up either console during the launch period. I doubt I'll be missing much.

Well, even though slightly underwhelmed overall myself, I know I'm quite looking forward to playing BF4 on PS4 at higher res and frame rate.

Yeah, could have done so getting on PC, but I am moving my multiplayer gaming to console.

BF4 is a struggle on current gen. The graphics are pretty bad, but I can live with that. The frame rate is what I have a real problem with. Usually feels like 20fps.

And I am sure, considering how much more powerful these consoles are than their predecessors, that we will see some great stuff to come.

No, not underwhelmed. And I've just sold my top-end gaming PC to fund both consoles.

It's pointless comparing the 2, PCs are always ahead technically as the hardware isn't fixed. Console gaming is about more than just graphical horsepower, a point which seems lost on a lot of people judging by "resolutiongate".

On a PC I can't get Driveclub, Forza 5, Dead Rising 3, Knack etc. etc. etc. all of which are as impressive as anything on the PC, if not more so.

Dont care for graphics.

I thought the PS4 was more for bigger servers, bigger environments, bigger games?

I'm still excited about getting my new console.... but only because of that ooooo new shiny toy ! feeling :p

That said I can't say I'm as excited as say when the N64 came out or the PS2. But meh as long as there is games its all good.
