Still don't get it, even if I turn off all AA and tess, and rock nearly 200FPS, as soon as that first depth of field grass scene kicks in, I drop to the low 30s :(

Your minimums look ok as around 30fps is normal for a 980

Looking at the memory speed in the top right corner of your screenshot shows it is not overclocked and running at the default 1752, this could explain your lower score compared to other 980s.:)

I know CPU speed doesn't effect Heaven as much as 3dMark but does it still play a part do you know?

Yes, in regards to bottlenecking. Other than that, the score isn't affected much.

Example:

Score 3746, GPU 980 @1544/2056, CPU 4790k @4.9
Score 3717, GPU 980 @1520/2000, CPU 3930k @5.0
Score 3626, GPU 980 @1504/1995, CPU 4790k @4.6

How does this happen if none of the cores is ever pushed to max though?

I've currently got my 2700k sitting at 4.4Ghz (H80 isn't performing as well as I had hoped) and none of the cores hit full pelt in Heaven, yet it clearly is impacting my score somehow.

4.4ghz is plenty on SB for a single 980.

If you are running PCI-E 2.0 instead of 3.0 this will make about 10 or 15 points difference which is not huge.

A tweak that sometimes gains a few points on an i7 system is to turn hyperthreading off.:)
