United States Grand Prix 2013, Austin - Race 18/19

Ferrari deliberately dropped Massa 5 places last year by breaking the seal on a gearbox. Yet now breaking the seal is allowed in the rules? What's changed? And whats the point in a seal if it can be broken without penalty.

Marussia did the same thing, same question there. At what stage does checking become maintenance?

I don't think Ferrari asked permission from the FIA. That's the difference.

So as long as you ask, it is OK to break the rules. :D

This. Seems odd that a seal can be broken with permission to simply poke around.

I suppose the FIA have painted themselves I to a corner a bit. They have enforced rules mandating reliable components, but need to ensure they don't fail for small reasons.

As per the rules. You can break the seal and replace many parts, only replacing certian part or breaking seal without fia permission is punishable. The point is save money, by not throwing away the gearbox after every race. But someparts can be replaced to keep reliabilty up. Rather than just starting a race with a knowen broken gearbox and retiring after one lap.

This attention and response is a load of rubbish. Its allowed in the rules, nothing changed.

But the point is RBR didn't know they had a damaged gearbox. They broke the seal to look.

The rules contradict their purpose. They should be used for 5 races and sealed to prevent maintenance and replacement of parts, yet asking to have a look means a team can rebuild their "sealed" gearboxes every weekend.

The issue is the rules, again.

Wasn't suggested that it was against the letter of the rules, just the spirit of the rules.

As for attention and reponse, well this is a discussion forum. It's being discussed. Deal with it. ;)

How does it go against the sprit of the rule, when its specifically allowed and written into said rule.

The headline was sealed gearboxes that last 5 races to save money. I've seen the rule, I dug it up and posted it earlier in the season. Italy perhaps?

RBR keep cracking them open to take a ganders, then there's a 50% chance they change parts like the dog rings. As Skeeter says, it's Triggers broom syndrome. My opinion is the sealed means sealed. Let them change the oil etc but that's it, otherwise they fit a new unit and take the penalty as set out in the rules. It's not routine maintenance. When my car goes in for a big service they don't crack open the gearbox to inspect the synchromesh.

.

Your opinion means sod all in this isntance. Your opin ion does not overide f1 rules.

Want the rules changed, fine. But to say they're going against the spirit of the rule, or cheating etc. is just utter bs.

Its not routine maintance. They have to show the fia they think something is wrong, before being allowed to open it up.
