Sky guys are so dumb, still discussing what happened with Max when he explained literally 40-50 minutes ago when his car stopped. He heard the team tell him to push hard, so expected it would be followed with a pitstop.

IE if Merc tell Hamilton it's hammertime, he'll burn up his tires and expect a pitstop, it's in his mind he's pitting at the end so even if the team didn't tell him to box he might do so accidentally because hammertime is effectively the first half of the pitstop message.

Either way, Max explained perfectly clearly why he thought he was pitting and why he stopped after a while rather than straight away, the sky guys are all becoming idiots.

It would be pretty close. Getting ridiculous though, he had a fuel issue didn't he overnight on friday that needed fixing and something happened to the car in qualifying as well so he was slightly down on power, though apparently only worth a few seconds over the race.

Says he spent the whole race just scared his engine was going to go, which you can both believe and completely understand.

EDIT:- In Malaysia he was going to finish with 25 points to Rosberg's 12, instead Rosberg gained 15 points as he moved up a place, a total 28 point swing. Either way he's now 26 points behind after today, not only would he have 25 points more, Rosberg would have 3 less. He'd have a 2 point lead today had his car not failed in Malaysia. If Rosberg had the same amount of stuff happen to his car in the other races, Hamilton would have a massive massive lead, that doesn't even account for Hamilton's worse starts than Rosberg this year.... if Hamilton hadn't been starting badly that gap would be even bigger again.

max verstappen won driver of the day... !! lmao

Verstappen has loads. It's done via a vote, so if you have a good fanbase that vote you get to win.

He has won 7 so far this season.

Read some of the commentary on the awards. Embarrassing how they have to justify some of them.

He may not have won his battle for position with race-winning team mate Daniel Ricciardo, but Verstappen pushed the Australian all the way at Sepang to score his fifth F1 podium.

5 / 10 race for me. It wasn't bad but the things that did happen weren't particularly exciting. A few cumulative observations from this and the past couple of races:

- Can RBR get enough aero advantage in 2017 to overcome the lack of power? 2017 could be really fun if they do, more so if Ferrari start underperforming and McLaren and / or Honda finally start performing to their historic level
- Verstappen is a great talent, but the lack of experience is really starting to show now, plus he's had some bad luck. His overtake on the McLaren (forget which one) in the esses was brilliant
- Ricciardo is showing a lot of WDC potential. Accumulating some serious points consistently, despite some bad luck
- Hamilton's relationship with his team is becoming a little more fractured race by race, but his class really showed at his adopted home race

And, finally, Rosberg. In some ways this race summed up him and his season for me. He only has to beat or follow his teammate to win the WDC and had a great opportunity today to out-muscle Hamilton. Yet at the start he inexplicably chose to go to the outside, a place where he's been consistently given a lesson by Hamilton. If the roles were reversed I've no doubt Hamilton would have pointed right at the apex and challenged Rosberg to risk taking them both out and move a step closer to the title. But he didn't, and he let Ricciardo in and had to settle for a defensive strategy that aimed him firmly for second place. On his day Rosberg can be a very fast qualifier but the evidence suggests that he's just mid-table at decision making in the car during the race. But what do I know - he's got a drive at Mercedes AMG F1 and I don't. Then again, we've both got the same amount of WDCs - for now at least.

He easily made the best pass of the day in passing Button up the inside through sector one where the lap before Kimi also on fresh rubber had to wait all the way through to the sharp corner into the backstraight. It was easily the best overtake.

Sainz and Alonso did nothing today. At other tracks those cars are 80-90seconds behind a Mercedes, that is where they were today. There was like a 50 second gap back to them from Vettel which is why he felt so comfortable to pit to go for a glory lap.

In any other race Hulk, Perez(without damage and the spin), Verstappen, Kimi, Bottas(without the puncture and damage) would all be in that huge gap between Vettel and Sainz and they'd be 5 places further back, easily.

If ALonso or sainz were even only 60 seconds behind the Merc it would mean being far closer compared to other races, but they were the same gap back as always, they passed cars that failed or took damage and/or had to pit after a lap.

Who made a better pass, answer, no one. Who caught up to Rosberg and tried to pass him, no one, who else did much of anything at all... no one.

Yeah, watch that race, Verstappen WAS driver of the day. At the start he had to react to Vettel's dive bomb, he in a split second swerved away while also avoiding Rosberg, then Vettel hit Rosberg went across the track infront of him, Verstappen had to go the long way around, ended up 5th or 6th out of that corner (which itself was good as he had to go way way around Vettel to miss him). He then passed Perez, then Kimi both with good moves then caught his team mate who only got ahead of Verstappen due to Vettel almost smashing him off.

Ricciardo from what I recall, passed no one, was gifted that position then Hamilton's car died from a commanding lead and he won. Verstappen was easily, easily the best driver in that race.
