Rosberg not losing any time to Ricciardo or Hamilton that I can tell so far, if he manages to go two stop and Hamilton isn't pulling out a gap now, then Hamilton is screwed and has had the race stolen from him.

Yep. Split strategy can only be bad for the leading driver. Has everything to lose from the uncertainty.

Ah okay, so Hamilton et al could all finish on softs potentially.

Except Hamilton being in the lead would always copy Rosberg's strategy if he is pitting after Rosberg. That guarantees him the win pretty much.

The team have potentially put Rosberg on a better strategy.
 
There's something fundamentally wrong with the brakes on that Haas car. Strange that it didn't show up over the first few races though, maybe an update that isn't working.

Yeah, if the team didn't let Rosberg get the undercut by prioritising him over Hamilton then he'd have been behind Kimi and Verstappen after the pitstop. Likewise, they chose to put Rosberg on a different strategy and that strategy might hand him a win over Hamilton if Ham now has to do an extra pitstop. That isn't doing well, that isn't luck, that is the team screwing Hamilton.

There is also simply an issue that Hamilton might not know Rosberg is on a two stop so isn't aware he needs to build a gap on this set of tires, Rosberg might not be two stopping but mediums certainly would hint at that. If Hamilton is just maintaining his gap to Ricciardo because why would he do anything else, he's going to strategy but if Rosberg's has changed and he hasn't been told, he's being thrown under the bus.
