Universal basic income to be trialled

My main cost for hobbies is fuel.
Set up is expensive. But everything else is just petrol!
We could definitely live on 1600 if mortgage free at today's prices

Remember, if you trusted the UBI to last, you wouldn't even need to worry about savings.

Same for us, we could quite easily live on just UBI based on today's prices. Anyone who is already relatively comfortable with their financial situation will benefit massively from this and will have option to either completely stop working or cut their hours down but not everyone is in that situation.

You say your set up costs were expensive. Say you get unlucky and you have to replace it twice in short space of time would UBI still be enough to cover the costs? It's all well and good if things are OK but people will still need to build up some sort of emergency fund for rainy day.

Yeah. It would be OK. And if not. Could probably just hop on a short term job.

Kayak. Isn't going to break. And cars aren't that expensive to fix. I'd just want to keep a savings buffer like I have now for that.

2k of disposable a month? That's plenty for us if you aren't saving anything.

Could go on holidays every couple of months too!

The thing is to pick up anything over £19k you'd have to work 40 hours (off set 19k PLUS earn more?)

Although this is on the assumption that this UBI model works in that way :)

Or the planet.

Maybe.. Its all part of how life goes.
We progress so far we basically become redundant by artificial evolution. A.E! :D

Maybe this is why we never see "aliens" they just either destroy themselves. Or evolve themselves into oblivion.
Why not we are still quite primitive in many ways and I’m sure the planet wouldn’t mind a break.

Once the mortgage is paid, I reckon I could get by on £1600pcm.

I'd be very tempted to stop working if it was at all possible.

Personally, I think this is a stupid idea, for many reasons that others have already given.

Would have to be a tiered system like now. Which is why I don't see it working.

You'd basically end up with our current tax system + a little more tax for all. But no where near enough to balance the books.

Give it a go, see what happens

It wasn't that long ago a two day weekend off seemed crazy.
I think the 4 day week is probably a more achievable aim. In the UK we could also aim for a German/Scandinavian level welfare system which would be a big step up for us without necessarily having all the baggage of a full UBI.

I mean the 4 day week makes sense for all sorts of reasons. More efficient workers and a better work/life balance. It's pretty much why the two dag weekend came in.

Why bother owning a house ?
Rent a pod
Eat the bugs.
Own nothing and be happy.
Lizard people have always run the show.
Now they will subdue the human race via freebies and when the global warming, terraforming is complete, reveal themselves and begin the genocide.

We need to act now.

Say no to socialism

Honestly I'd be less upset about this if the rent for the pod was reasonable, the contract was reasonably secure and there was some degree of freedom.

But as it stands you pay a limb every month for your landlord-white cube, they won't want to do any maintenance on it, you can't have a pet, you can't decorate it the way you like and your contract will have to be renewed every year.

UBI is inevitable. AI, robotics and automation..

The most important thing is getting regulation and taxation around these technologies right rather than it being funded via helicopter money or direct payments from the central bank balance sheet.

After tax I guess it'll be nearer £1400

Plus then there's council tax, utilities, rent/mortgage. I think most people will be wanting to work tbh.

Wouldn't the entire tax system be rewritten, at least this would be a giant opportunity to do so? Re Designed from the ground up.
